I am looking for information that will be helpful to me in the future.I am a R.N. with 25+ years experience.I have recently passed the national long term care exam.My plans are to complete a business degree with emphasis in management. Then I would like to pursue a position as a long term care administrator.I would like to obtain a couple of years experience then move to a position as an director of operation for a long term care corporation. What advise can you share with me to prepare me for this career opportunity. Some ideas on online courses,etc.Thanks.

The administrator I work for is also an RN. She sometimes talks about her first experiences and that she started in a 60 bed home because it was more managable. As far as the requirements, you would know more than me, but I feel that having your RN will really help you as an administrator. Not only will you be prepared for the financial and managerial aspects, but you will also know what the residents need and your DON will appreciate you soooo much. I have found, in my experience, that a nursing background helps alot, although I have had other administrators who were not RN's who were great...guess I'm just a little biased for us nurses. Good luck.

First of all, congratulations on passing your NAB and State Board. I have been licensed as a nursing home administrator for going on 15 years now and have worked in a variety of positions in the industry. As an RN and administrator, you actually bring a great deal of value to the table. Many LTC companies are happy to work with you given your background.
I would suggest going to the web site for your State that is a member of the American Health Care Association. There are generally some very good references for you to use in gaining some experience. You obviously passed your boards, so your regulatory knowledge is strong. Have you worked as an AIT before? If not, it might be a good idea to contact a company that has opportunities as an Assistant Administrator ..... this will help you gain some additional administrative experience.
Good luck .... if you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me.

Do you already have a BSN? University of Phoenix has a fabulous MBA program....I actually did it in Phoenix a long time ago, but apparently now it is offered on-line, for the B.A. as well as the MBA. Good program to consider and good luck.

Hello! I am actually in the University of Phoenix MBA program , flexnet style......we meet about twice every 6 weeks (on ground), but we have to posts and write papers and answer questions via internet. We have had a few drop out because they state that on-ground classes are easier. I would love to talk with someone in administration and what sort of career path they have chosen. Thank you!
