hey guys! i am scheduled to start a new job sept 12. i am completly psyched!!!! the only problem i have is my vacation that is already planned. i know most places require at least 90days before you can even take days off. i am wondering if i can explain to my supervisor that the trip is already palnned and scheduled, but i would need a week off!!! i know i am being a spoiled, selfish brat, but did anyone ever have a situation like this???? what did you do???? oh yeah my vaca is scheduled aroung thanksgiving (another problem) it will be nov25-nov 30,

I always let employers know when I'm offered employment when I am planning on taking vacation time, that way they know ahead of time. I would ask right away that you need the time off and that you know since you're so new that it will probably not be a paid vacation.

you should have told them while u were discussing salaries and u were about to give ur answer wether to take the job or not...usually that's how alot of people that need to go on vacation while they're on their first few months at a position. i suggest calling the manager asap, before you're put in the schedule even if you're just goin to be on orientation for a few weeks.

Perhaps you should have put on your application that you weren't available until AFTER the vacation. That way it doesn't put anyone in a bind. The manager won't be put in the position of being the bad guy (anyway you look at it, the manager is going to be the bad guy); you'll start out on the right foot with your co-workers; and you can hold you head high when it comes to knowing you did the right thing.

even though i was asked when i could start, i think almost three months from now, would have been unrealistic.... oh well, i guess i should have asked for advice before i accepted the position. but they literally offered it on the spot, i was only thinking YES!!!! i dont know what i will do, from everyones advice, it seems its a little to late, but keep the advice coming thanks guys :)

I have mentioned the fact that I have a planned vacation during the interview/hiring process. It's probably a little tougher now that you're hired, but I would hope your new supervisor would be accomadating since you know so far in advance (well before the scheduel is out). I'm happy to say that where I work, the managers seem to bend-over backwards to accomodate employees :) Of course, here I sit in my house as my husband is across the country looking at houses. All because I was too scared to ask :crying2:

It is going to depend on where you are working, many facilities have rules in place that vacation time over holidays is by seniority.............and unfortunately, since you did not have it requested when you were hired, it may be tough on your new manager to grant the time for you. You can give it a try, but be aware that in most cases, it is not going to be granted.......

I know that this is not what you want to hear, but this is how things go in health care.

Be aware that holiday requests are usually do in six months in advance in many facilities.
