New job offer, should I accept?

Hi.  I recently interviewed for a full time position at a pediatric specialty clinic.  This clinic deals with pediatric patients with chronic illness.  From what the nurse manager described in the interview, the position is pretty much hands off patient care wise, only taking vitals signs and occasionally helping with a lab draw.  The main part of my job would be charting/paper work. The hours would be great, M-F 8-5. No weekends, no holidays.  The benefits would be good, but the pay would be less (the manager already warned me of that).  While I'm excited for a new opportunity and a much needed break from the hospital setting, I fear that I may get bored with this position. While I definitely welcome a less stressful job, I don't feel like I'm at the point of wanting to be totally hands off patient care wise.  The manager sent me a text this morning stating that she had sent my information to HR to make an official offer and they would be contacting me later on this week.  Any advice? Thanks in advance.

How badly do you want to leave the bedside? (only you know).  Remember this: you can always go back. This sounds like it may be a great opportunity and depending on how much less, still maybe you should take it unless you can't pay the bills w/the pay.

Read all the threads where people are trying anything to get away from the bedside. You have a chance; maybe you should go ahead and take it.

You could take the job and maybe work PRN in a more acute setting if you wanted the best of both worlds? I know this position would be Monday through Friday, but if you're not entirely sure you're ready to leave the bedside completely, I'm sure there would be places that would accept weekend help every once in a while.   Plus, like SmilingBluEyes said, you can always go back.  The fact that you already have acute care experience would make that transition much easier than for someone who only has clinic experience.

I am in the same situation as you. I am wanting to leave the hospital, 3 12s a week for a mon to fri 8 to 5 family practice position.

I am leaning towards taking it..but I am nervous. The drive is longer than my job now, but it'll be more money. I am trying to get used to having only 2 days off a week instead of my wonderful 4 days off per week that I have now. I wish you good luck in your decision!

If you can afford the pay cut, take it! Try something new. Take a little break from hospital chaos. Bask in feeling bored for a while.  Enjoy your holidays for a year. You can always go back to the hospital.

Alternatively, this could be the gateway to more hands-on, non-hospital opportunities down the road.  Win win!

I don't miss the hospital!

Thank you all for your responses.  Erindel, I too am nervous about transitioning from 3 12s to 5 8s.  I've always had a hard time with decisions like this because of the guilt I feel of leaving my coworkers behind.  I know that guilt shouldn't be apart of my decision making, but it's hard for me.  Thanks again.

Sounds like a good opportunity. don't assume it will be boring, though. You will be dealing with essentially two patients at a time: the parent and the child. You will need to be good at wrangling those personalities and needs while you do your work. It may also be emotionally challenging to watch kids struggle with chronic illness. Take it and see how it goes...
