New Job! Nurse Tech for Post Partum!

Nursing Students General Students

I found this board a few weeks ago and haven't been able to go to any other websites since then. I'm starting the Nursing Program in the Fall and hope to become a Nurse-Midwife and eventually get my Masters so that I can teach.

So ... after reading all of the posts, I was dying to get into Nursing somehow (only have my CNA), when a friend called and told me there was an opening for a Nurse Tech on the Post Partum floor of the hospital where I will be having my clinicals. Could the timing have been any better? No way! I called, they called me back, I went in for a first interview ... and was hired on the spot! It just doesn't get any better than that.

I start in ten days and couldn't be more happy ... and the sad part is that it pays LESS THAN HALF what my current job pays. And I don't care! It's right where I want to be ...

Thanks to all of you who post here and bare your souls ... as scary as it seems, I'm looking forward to Nursing school and all that comes with it! I'm on my way!

parker in arkie,

Well, here's some numbers for comparison ... to buy a house, 3 bed 2 ba in a nice neighborhood, you'll pay around 400k. We rent a nice 3 bed 2 ba in a great neighborhood and most house rent for around $2k/month. And I paid $2.15 per gallon for gas this morning!

The nurses start at around $19/hr at the hospital ... but I make more than that working in HR in an office! But you can go south an hour or so and work in LA and make a lot more than that. So, after two years of school and learning all this important stuff, I may have to take a pay cut to do what I love!

Yes, it's expensive to live in SoCal ... but it's also beautiful and sunny and warm. I was snowboarding last week in the mountains two hours from here and I was at the beach in the sun yesterday. I don't think I could ever give this up ... even when the cost of living gets outrageous!

Thanks for all the wonderful posts ... you guys are great!

Specializes in Adolescent Psych, PICU.

I know here where I live (Oklahoma City) those positions pay about $8-9 an hour. You can get a nice 3 bedroom house here for an average of $80K, a lot of nice ones are around $70K as well. Starting pay for RNs here is, on average, $15.50 an hour. I think gas right now is running $1.50 a gallon

Anyways, congrats on your job! Sounds wonderful!

Geeesh...I guess you probably wouldn't want to know that I make $12.25 day shift for being a Nurse Extern then...with additional $2/hour for evening/night and additional $2/hour for weekends.

Specializes in LTC, ER, ICU,.

congratulations!

memphispanda,

That's great pay ... must be a large hospital I'm guessing? Sure wish other hospitals paid like that! There is a differential for nights ... but I'm not a night person in the slightest so I declined. Fortunately, the money doesn't matter much as I've got another job that pays well and my hubby takes care of everything else! :)

Have I told you all how excited I am???? I've walked around with a smile on my face for days now ... makes me laugh that I'm so happy to get a job that pays so little! I guess when you get where you want to be ... you just don't care anymore!

SC--it's a large system, but a small hospital. It's great--I don't have a lot that I can actually DO, but I get to see a lot. I just started my job too.

Congrats on your new position!

What a perfect opportunity for you! I would definitely check with HR to see what bennies you could get to help you through nursing school.

I worked L&D and postpartum as a unit secretary before I went to nursing school. When I graduated, I was offered a position in L&D as a new grad!

Good luck and keep us posted. I look forward to seeing you more on the BB.
