New-ish US RN trying to find a job in Manchester UK

World UK

Hello everyone. I know that there is a limited amount that I can do considering the global pandemic, but I am just trying to get whatever I can get done with my process of finding a job and registering with the NMC.

My background: I am a qualified RN in the US, I graduated in 2019 and spent 4 months as a new grad in a general ICU. I was doing great! But, I am not working right now because I was in Manchester for the last few months getting married etc, then global pandemic happened and now our plans were interrupted as I was originally only going to be in the US for a few weeks or a month while I applied for a visa via my husband. Anyway, now I am applying for jobs in Manchester, it'd be nice to secure a job so that when I do arrive in the UK (hopefully in the Summer sometime??) it's just one less thing to do.

I have been applying to several trusts, but I was just wondering:

How long it usually takes trusts to get back to you whether you get an interview or not? Will they usually let you know if you will not get an interview?

With my limited experience, do I have a shot at even getting a job?? I'd love to be in an ICU again as critical care is really my passion, but do trusts hire new-ish grads in the ICU in the UK?

On the online NHS applications, it asks if you are registered with NMC, if I am putting "no" is that automatically putting me at a disadvantage?

Thanks in advance, I'd love to hear if anyone has any words of wisdom for me!

app22 please can you share with me the process of application. I checked on NMC website and it says nurses educated outside EU most take ielts. How did you get the requirement waived. Thanks

I was trained in an English-speaking country so I only had to prove that my training was in English. I did this with my university's official transcript!:)

That’s great to hear, I had to take the IELTS before the process changed (American trained) and it was definitely awkward during the speaking portion LOL.

I'd try and aim to get some Band 4 roles whilst waiting on the NMC or an ODP (operating room practictioner) role

Hope this helps

ODP is an HCPC registered profession, how will the OP convince the trust they're qualified for this role?

Ah, sorry I didn't realise! However, Band 4/3 posts could be viable!

Hi, so just to be clear I, as an American, would have to register with the NMC before applying for jobs in the Uk AND starting the visa process?

Once I go through everything with the NMC is there a limit to how long I have my registration for- how long I need to find a job by?

Once the NMC says I'm good to go, then I can apply for a visa and then go job hunting? Or job hunting then visa? I guess I am confused whats comes first, second, third, etc.

Thanks!

I would start here, at the NMC's website: https://www.nmc.org.uk/registration/joining-the-register/register-nurse-midwife/trained-outside-the-eueea/

they have a whole checklist and timeline. You can take the CBT in your country if you find a proctor (it's done through Pearson Vue, the same people who do the NCLEX). I already had my visa in place through my spouse, but from what I can gather from reading a lot of this forum, other forums, and Youtube, internationally trained nurses often use a recruiter to get a job and visa. If you can get a job before you come over, the job can help you with the visa. Some jobs will help pay for, or entirely pay for, the NMC registration costs in exchange for a work contract. I imagine this happens easier for nurses with experience in wanted areas.

The OSCE is the in-person exam, and you will probably have to take that regardless of your experience, and that can only be done in the UK.

I have heard of some nurses who were able to do everything (including get the visa, the job, and the CBT) and come over to the UK and do the OSCE. You can actually take the OSCE before the CBT, but its the most expensive part of an expensive process, so I think most people save it for last.

hey @app22 did you ever progress in getting with the NMC and getting work? I'd love to know!

Interestingly there are a few places in Manchester that are owned by HCA UK, which is the UK branch of a big conglomerate that owns hospitals in the US. They owned two hospitals in the city I did nursing school in, and I heard the best things about one hospital and had awful experiences at the other, but one of my best friends works at that bad hospital and she loves it.
