Hello,
I have been offered a job as an Informatics nurse. I'm really excited about the new job but I am concerned that once the system has been implemented I will no longer be needed. I am working at a health center in the ambulatory division and we will be implementing EMR in all of the out patient clinics.
It sounds like it will be a long process but I'm concerned about job security.
Has anyone been in a similiar situation?
Thanks for any advice.

I'm in informatics but it's recent.
I would think tht even after implementation there will be system and user support necessary.

Nursing informatics is an interesting job from what I hear. My old med/surg manager switched to this position and loves it. She helped implement paperless charting at our hospital. Currently she is working on wireless transmission capabilities from a Paramedic's EKG monitor in route to the ER to a Physicians PDA. That way he can tell the patient to bypass the ER and go straight to cath lab.
Soon she will be implementing one of the SICU beds into a EICU(Electronic ICU) bed. Any doctor can log into the room from anywhere in the country and perscribe from there desktop. Amazing stuff. Personally, I would be all over that position.

We have 2 Informatics Nurses and they are searching for a third. (Not me!) We have had the system for about four years and started with one IT nurse and super users for the units. I think you are very safe. Mine is only a 100 bed hospital.
Thanks to all that replied to my post. I am going to accept the position tomorrow.....wish me luck.
Thanks again

Hi I'm interested to go for my master for informatics nurse. Can you tell me what exactly an informatics nurse do? How is demand in the market? How strong the computer background they required?

Informatics nurses work in systems, nys. It can be training, programming, systems administration, systems development - ir depends on the spot and the facility.
For example, I support clinical users of our health records and reporting system. But I also do some database development and management, intranet publishing and development, and right now, because we're a small, short-staffed, rural facility and State will be in soon I'm typing/updating/publishing to the intranet all of our policies and procedures. Am I a secretary? No, but what will take me a day to do would take my DON three weeks. So I do what needs doing.
You'd need at least a year if not more of solid systems experience.
Informatics nursing from what I understand, is combining your nursing/clinical expertise with IT.
I have 23 years of nursing experience and experience with the implementation of an electronic medical record in the area I'm working in now which is reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
My new position did not require me to have a master's in informatics.
I hope this helps.
