Published

I was wondering how is the job market in Houston, are there still more and more experienced nursing coming into Texas or there are opportunities for new grads. Thanks in advance for the input guys

I would also like to know....

Specializes in Cardiac ward.

i would like to know aswell...:)

I found 2 positions in home health care, but I havent been able to start either one. I am waiting (desperately) on references from my professors - who seem to have taken the summer off - and the other job seems flakey and doesnt want to pay for my training. I am really scared, worried I wont be able to pay August rent.

So things are not happy in my world, even with the job offers. I need a PAYCHECK!!!

Specializes in ICU.

I'm a new grad with a job...

There are always positions for new grads... They are just highly competitive.

My advice is apply EARLY and set yourself apart from others.

@ eyoliver something will come up soon..

@ AznPlayR99 that's what's up..

I have heard a lot of people talking about HCA Houston and they all have jobs..

Specializes in Psych, EMS.

They're out there, but as another poster noted, they are very competitive.

To get a job, I went to the yellow pages of Houston online and made a record of every hospital here. There are hospitals outside of the Medical Center! I then looked at them online individually to see if they had job openings for new grads. I even applied to ones that didn't but said "experience preferred" (as opposed to required.) I made sure my resume and cover letter were impeccable as possible, I went to my career center and had them look at it (a very under-utilized resource!), and the woman who hired me said that my unique and personalized cover letter caught her eye. I think what helped me the most was showing passion at the interviews I really wanted. Be humble yet confident, show enthusiasm and personality. Best of luck!!

just like everyone else said. As a new grad, I think my resume and cover letter really helped me out! Also your personality to not be afraid to speak out to people. Be bold, call the main hospital line and ask to speak to HR, then ask the name of the Nurse recruiter and fax#. Fax your stuff with the Nurse recruiters name. Go to the job fairs, that really helped me get my job. There are some nurse recruiters that go there and you can speak to personally. But it is very competitive! I felt like I was applying for nursing school all over again and only the best were going to get in! So once again, you have to sell yourself!

I have had a hard time getting interviews even with 3 years of LVN experience. Time to bump up my game and get positive! I know it's hard, y'all....just keep pounding the pavement. A door will open soon!

I think the majority of city hospitals are only hiring new grads for their residency programs. The only place I have scored an interview at is one of the small communities outside of Houston.
