New grads: ever feel like EVERYONE around you is finding jobs?

Published

Now I hate comparing myself to other people... but it is really hard. Especially when every time I log on to facebook I feel like someone else is posting how they got another job offer....

I've even had one friend tell me how he got a full time job then received numerous calls for other positions. He was forever boasting about it...with a dumb look on his face (lol) how obnoxious. I feel like they always want to throw it in people's faces as soon as they get an offer.

Ahhh I'm venting....

I guess it is exciting hearing feedback from all the searching but I am mean be humble about it :uhoh3:

the only feedback I've gotten so far was a call back for a camp nurse position. I think they wanted someone already licensed and they weren't to thrilled about the idea of a temp license... we'll see

It is exciting, when people are excited they want to share and you have to remember they aren't trying to rub your face in it. They shouldn't have to hide their excitement because someone else might not have heard back. When I got a call back I shouted it on my facebook. I was so excited and I was only given gloom and doom stories. I had lost all hope of even obtaining a hospital job and knowing that jobs in my area are super scarce I really was down. But I took a lot of initiative, got my boards done ASAP, applied to 16 jobs at one hospital the day I got my lic number and so when it paid off and I got noticed. I was stoked and I shared it with everyone. Even here. Do I feel bad for those that might not have hits? Absolutely, but I am not going to let it take away from all my hard work and determination. Look at ways to improve what your doing so you can go shout out to the world you got a hit too!

Good luck to you!

This is probably one of the least helpful and most hurtful things to say to a new grad nurse.

It actually seemed like really good advice to me. If their peers are all landing jobs, talk to them and find out what they are doing differently. I would absolutely do that.

Once you apply for a job, follow up! That's the key. Call HR and check up on the status of your application frequently. It puts your name out there, and builds you a reputation. Don't be obnoxious about it, but let them know you are on top of your game. That's how I got my job. My HR rep. came to my interview (they usually don't) just to meet me because we had talked on the phone so many times.

I think SydneyJo explained well why it is frustrating and aggravating to a new grad to hear "advice" for their job search and why they haven't gotten a job yet. As if they haven't done all that and more. I am through defending myself, but I will say that I was one of the hardest working people in school and have the GPA to show for it. I did all the same things that other new grads did to find jobs and many things they didn't do. At this point I'm not job searching anymore as I've decided to go to grad school. If a new grad is ASKING "what can I do to make myself a more attractive candidate," then by all means advise. In a thread like this one it's just inappropriate and hurtful.

I agree with Jeannette on this one. It's the equivalent of hearing your married friends try to tell you how to meet your soul mate and what they did to get theirs. It's like....really, I should just get out there and meet people?? Who knew! :uhoh3:

Sometimes, you just need to vent and you don't want people to give you "no duh!" advice. I realize people have the best intentions when they tell new grads to get out there, follow up, be patient, be persistent, this is what worked for me and it only took 6 weeks! etc....but I bet they're already doing that!

As soon as I was able to put a license number on the online apps I was submitting I got a call for an interview within 3 wks and landed my first job. If you haven't taken the NCLEX yet, that could be what is holding you back. Don't fret, you will get something soon!

I disagree and I am a new grad. I get it. How do you know you were one of the hardest working people? How do you know that most of the others weren't working just as hard or harder then you? It's all pretty subjective. I am someone though that appreciates constructive criticism. I am not going to sit around crying that I can't get noticed but then get offended when someone offers some sound advice. (not saying the OP did this). If there is a group of 5 people and 4 of them are getting jobs and 1 is not, it would be beneficial for that one to talk to the others and find out what they are doing differently because obviously it worked.

You know what? Maybe it's not obnoxious to give well-meaning advice. But after people have already let you know that your advice wasn't what they were looking for and nothing they don't already know, why persist and insist that they MUST accept it from you? I dont' get it.
