new grad.. where to work?

:redbeathe helloo everyone! i got my BSNdegree outside the US last april 2007, migrated in US after i graduate, and just passed NCLEX-RN August 2008. I dont have any nursing job experiences yet.. my questions are:

1. is it a right choice to work in a nursing home to start my first job?

2. i want to consider workin' in a hospital for a good exposure, but i am told by my friends that hospitals will not accept me because i dont have any nursing job experiences yet...cry.gif

3. am i still qualified to join in a graduate nurse program eventhough i graduated last year of 2007? i tried to search for nursing grad programs in the net but i realized they've just started.. so i dont know wat to do anymore..

im excited to work but dont know how to proceed.. hope you guys could help mesmile.gif im new heresmile.gif

Hi!

As as far as the Grad school piece ( having just gone through some of that myself) I know that if you have a nursing degree, most schools want you to have a minimum one year work experience prior to applying to an MSN program.

From what i see on this site is that most of the newer grads in the Twin Cities prefer getting into the hospitals instead of a nursing home. I am a DON at a St. Paul nursing home and also see the same thing happening where I am at. I do hire new grads and let them take the time to learn, some do stay in the long-term care field after they find out they like it.

Hi Noc4senuf!

I'm interested in working as a CNA in a nursing home...hopefully starting next summer, after I've done my CNA training. Can you give a rough estimate as to what wages are like for CNAs in nursing homes? I have a pretty good idea for acute care, but lack the experience to start of there. I think a nursing home would be a great place for me to get my "nursing feet" wet, before I actually start RN school.

Thanks!

Lola

I can't state the average for all of the Twin Cities but, without differentials on the low end about $10 and on the upper end close to $15.

thanks for your replies:nurse: yes im considering to work in nursing home too because i think its a good experience when it comes to prioritizing ,managing time, meeting new people, etc.. its just that some people i knew discourage me to land my feet on nursing homes and that its better to start in a hospital right away. im just sooo confused. again, thankyou so much:wink2:

angel,

I think that if you want to work in a hospital eventually, I would start out in a hospital. They are very different work environments and hospitals hire new grads all the time. Just find one that will give you a good orientation and the support you need as a new grad.
