New Grad Work Question?????

Published

HI EVERYONE!!!

I just have a question.. I don't know if everyone knows how hard it is to find a job for new grads here in NY. My best friend's sister is a nurse and works in the ER unit. She asked me if I would be interested working in the ER because there's an opening in her unit. My dilemma is I don't know If I am capable of working in ER and Im scared. Also you know how everyone is saying that Med/Surge or ICU should be the starting job for newly grads. But I am also in need of work and have not heard anything from the hospitals Ive applied for, so I also feel I shouldn't turn this offer down. I just want hear everyone's opinion. Thank you

It seems to be tough to find a job in many places. Regarding this ED position, how much orientation will they give you, and is it structured? If it's a decent length of orientation, you might want to give it a try.

I would take it and do everything to for a good evaluation. Go for it, it won't hurt you! Jobs are very hard to find.

I would say go for it.

If I were you, I'd take the position! The job market is tight right now for any new grad, so if you can get your foot in the door, do it! Besides, once you're in you can try to transfer to another unit if you feel you're not cut out for the ER. LunahRN brings up a great point about asking for orientation details - I've heard that the learning curve is steep for new grads starting out in the ER. You want to make sure you'll have support when you need it most.

Good Luck!

A couple of my classmates went into ED after graduation. One worked as a care partner in one during school, the other hadn't even worked in a hospital before...and both AFAIK are doing fine.

If you have a good orientation and are ready for that learning curve, you'll probably do fine too. So go for it!

THANK YOU ALL!! All your opinions are appreciated.

I am still trying to find out how long the orientation is but haven't got a hold of the person who offered me the job yet.

I am hoping to get some call back already from the med/surge unit I've applied to

It's so funny though when you give in your resume and the first thing they ask if you have any experience. You tell em no and they tell you it's a problem. BUt how are you going to get that Med/Surge experience if no one is willing to hire you?? Is there an alternative other than Med/Surge to get that nursing experience?

HIIIIIII

I found out that the orientation is 3 months long and can ask for extension if needed.

Is that good enough time??

Three months is good enough time....,That is good.,

I would take any job that has anything to do with nursing. Three months is a good amount of time for orientation. Did they offer you a job yet? Good luck!

Congratulations! as a new grad...feeling exciting, anxious, scare ?? don't I know that feeling. I think for the first year or two maybe a good start would be the home care facility. The pay is not as high but it is a good place to built your confindent and experience. I think become an RN is costly but, if I mess up it costs me even more...
