new grad woahs

Published

Sorry, more vents from a struggling new grad. I like my floor, i like my co-workers, but i HATE my super negative, unpleasable preceptor. she gives me insane anxiety. my confidence level is in the negatives and i want to quit everyday! i worked super hard to get here and i wont let ONE person ruin it, but GEEZ! i leave work everyday feeling like a total failure. she picks apart EVERYTHING!!!!! she's very white glove yanno...i welcome the correction, but im getting weary from all the bad and i leave feeling "well, dang....did i do ANYTHING right today." i cry in my car, on the way home and usually on my way to work. i know im new, and things are suppose to be hard....but im already running around trying to stay on top of everything PLUS stay ahead of my hawk eyes preceptor. im not whining, i appreciate someone pointing out everything...and i mean EVERYTHING....but my confidence is dwindling....:uhoh3:

welcome to nursing. ask for another preceptor. in my experience, sometimes personalities clash and so you may do much better with one that can give effective critiques without crushing your spirit. besides this person can do more then crush your spirit as you learn, he/she can talk trash about you to your nurse manager or your co-workers and ruin your reputation. if he/she does a really bad job of criticizing you, then you may end up being let go.

Go to your nurse educator and ask for another preceptor. Let her/him know your preceptor's teaching style and your learning style is not compatible. Then give examples.

I believe some people are good nurses, good at what they do, but are HORRIBLE teachers. Not every nurse can be a preceptor and teach a new grad, or an experienced nurse new to a certain area.

I 3rd asking for another preceptor. My preceptor is wonderful and you can still learn a lot and improve without being constantly torn down.
