new grad.

I just graduated on 12-20-05 and I had a question. Someone told me that I may be able to get some kind of temp. license with my director's help, so I can work while waiting to take the NCLEX exam. Is this true and how would I go about it if it is true?

This really depends on your state. In the old days when people waited several weeks/months for test results, most states granted a GN (Graduate nurse) permit to allow you to begin practice. These days only some states retain this as the wait for licensure is not very long after testing.

In the state I live in, prior to graduation you sumbit some paperwork to the state (not sure of the entire process, haven't made it that far yet) which allows you to work as a GN after graduation. You have X amount of days (or tries) to pass the NCLEX or you are fired from your GN job. After you pass the NCLEX, you then become an RN for the facility, rather than a GN. There is one disclaimer though, you have to find a facility that allows GN's, which is not everywhere. We have several that do not hire GN's, you must come to them with a license.

I just graduated as well (the same day in fact) -- I am in NYS and the hospital I am working at had me fill out an application for a temporary permit which will allow me to practice under a RN's license until I pass my boards -- check out your state, but that is what NY does. Congrats!!!

thanx for all the replies. :-) i guess my question would have been more helpful if i had told you that i was in california. i forget different states different laws. i did have to fill out paperwork but the director hasn't sent it in yet he will be sending it the first week of jan. but i believe that is just for the appication for my l.v.n boards. he had said that we probably wont even test until feb. or march so i was in the mean time wanting to work and make money. i have an awsome husband who has supported and encouraged me through the last 3 years and 3 great little girls who have done the same now i think that i should get back into the work force and be able to contribute to the family. :-) i could go get a job as a wopper flopper but would rather work in the medical field so i don't forget all the stuff i learned before i take the nclex.

i just did a search of the california vocational nursing practice act. this is specifically what the law says (section 2872.2 interim permits):

an applicant for license by examination shall submit a written application in the form prescribed by the board

after completion of a board accredited or approved nursing program and approval of the application, the board may issue an interim permit authorizing the applicant to practice vocational nursing pending the results of the first licensing examination.

if the applicant passes the examination, the interim permit shall remain in effect until an initial licensee is issued by the board. if the applicant fails the examination, the interim permit shall terminate upon notice by certified mail, return receipt requested, or if the applicant fails to receive the notice, upon the date specified in the interim permit.

a permittee shall function under the supervision of a licensed vocational nurse or a registered nurse, who shall be present and available on the premises during the time the permittee is rendering professional services. the supervising licensed vocational nurse or registered nurse may delegate to the permittee any function taught in the permittee's basic nursing program.

an interim permittee shall not use any title or designation other than vocational nurse interim permittee or "v.n.i.p."

i am surprised that your nursing school did not help everyone in your class to fill out your applications to take the licensing exam. usually, at that time you request an interim permit. if you are not sure that your school helped you to apply to take your licensing exam, you really should give them a call and ask in order to make this clear. it is not up to an employer to do this for you. when you speak of your "director", are you talking about a potential employer, or the director of your nursing program?
