New Grad

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi all,

New grad here, started my first job 2 months ago on a Med/Surg floor, absolutely love it. Love the job, love my bosses, love my coworkers, great residency program, great pay, etc... I have been looking into different certifications like chemo/oncology, however most say minimum1-2 years experience. Are there any cert's I can apply and test for right away? Any suggestions on which cert's I should attempt first?

Thank you

I would think about ACLS and PALS/NALS. I would get the book for whatever certifications you are thinking about, and at least start looking them over so that you know what it entails and you can start studying, looking things over, that kind of thing.

I would look at what the transfer policy is at your facility. NOT that you want to transfer, but perhaps a weekend shift here and there on your oncology floor. You could also take a per diem position with home health/hospice palliative care to get some experience.

Best wishes in your future endevours!!

What a refreshing change from the usual threads from new nurses.

I would advise you to contact your facility's education department and ask them if there are any in-house opportunities available. They may have some offerings that would interest you. The bonus? You'd have an opportunity to meet nurses who work in other areas and gain a broader perspective. Another thought - volunteer for some 'extra' stuff like committee or project work. These are great learning opportunities as well.

Start looking at grad schools to apply to, seriously.

Grad school...I doubt it. I'm definitely getting my bsn but after that being that I'll be 39 that will be it for me. Yes I know 39 is still young, but I've spent most of my life in and out of college in and out of jobs and I finally found my passion. So for now I kinda want to enjoy life lol...I do want to grow within nursing. I really like the heart how it works, pretty amazing we have a self sustaining pump in our chest. I'm thinking cardiac icu in 2 years or so.
