Hi all, my my wife and I are originally from south Florida. I am a ER/medsurg RN. My wife will be finishing school in 4 months as a RN. Her family is from NYC. Recently a nurse told me that some rn's go to nyc for a couple years due to very high salaries. Live very cheaply save Lot of money then leave. One lady told me she did m/s and home health and after five years had saved over 400k. Any truth to this or is it complete BS?

Hi all, New ER hire beginning in March, 6 months of medsurg experience. Any suggestions on books I can study prior to help my transition? Thank you
  3. OK so I am in my residency training class yesterday and we are talking to an ortho surgeon and a colorectal surgeon. A new grad nurse, like myself, asks why there are so many PA's and only one NP working in the hospital. They state it was a mandate by the physicians due to the model of their schooling to only hire PA's. They found NP's needed much more Medical training after school than the PA's did. Has anyone else seen this in their hospitals? I am starting RN-BSN-FNP in january and I really dont want to study FNP then not be able to get a job in a hospital preferrably an ER. I am currently on the waiting list to transfer to the ER here from medsurg so the experience will be there just need the degree.
  4. Having not been there seeing your patients and going off just what you wrote, definitely Rapid on first patient with BP so low, especially after finding empty pain bottles from home. On MI patient, I probably would have called a Rapid to immediately just to cover myself, chest pain like that in the ER, patient should have never come to you. Unfortunately, same thing happened to my father just two weeks ago, went into ER with massive chest pain (massive MI) was "stabilized" in the ER sent to MedSurge, had another MI and didnt wake up. ER nurse and physician are now under investigation and last I heard from the director of the hospital neither are working until investigation is completed. My suggestion for next time is when you get report on a patient you do not feel is stable, inform your charge nurse and let her know patients condition in ER and he/she may stop the admit for you. I've done that my share of times and been commended for it by not only my charge but also by hospitalist, most of them usually ended up in CVICU so yea that is scary. And dont stress the cardiologist, it seems these days they forget to teach manners in Med school. I saw a charge nurse explode on a arrogant doctor/surgeon on my floor and yes she is still working here.
  5. I guess it depends on what your hospital does, I see mostly Cholorectal and ortho, but most of the patients come with accompanying commorbidities like pressure ulcers, diabetic wounds, HTN, COPD, CHF etc. My hospital doesnt do any OB or peds. We also administer Chemo on my floor but I am not certified...YET!!!
  6. One more thing. Don't worry about what the job description says, years experience etc...just apply for the jobs. You may still get interviews. Sometimes hospitals change their hiring policies without updating the job posting. And don't I really mean don't accept less than I would say 25 per hour even as a new grad. Here in South fla hospitals are trying to lower the starting pay for new nurses. The more that accept the more hospitals will try to pay us less.
  7. Well I'll tell you my story, so i graduated in April 2015 took boards June 2, i do have a CNA license, so while studying for boards i applied at a few hospitals got about 3 call backs and all told me to reapply as an RN once i pass, they sounded like they were blowing me off. Well i passed my boards got my license June 6, got trashed that day...I deserved it lol, June 7 I sent out emails to all the hospitals that told me to reapply as an RN...three days later I got a job offer started Aug. 10 and its been the best three months of my life thus far. In short, apply the day you get your license, apply in quantity, all departments, all hospitals in your area dont be shy about it there will be alot and I mean alot of competition. Best of luck.
  8. Ok, so im about to pull the hair outa my head. I'm in my first job as a nurse, absolutely love it. I new nursing would be fun but wow, the things i get to do is just amazing. Ok so now i need to get my BSN, hospital gives me 5 years and they do tuition reimbursement after just 3 months of working here...can you beleive that just 3 months!!!! Here is my canundrum, hope i spelled that right...I can go to a small private rn-bsn program completely online like keiser or phoenix, no clinical hours, truckload of money, and get it done in 9-12 months. Or i can get into a University, pay a bit less, longer completion time, and do clinical hours. So......does it really matter these days what kind of school, small private vs big traditional university? I mean yea i probably wouldnt pass up getting an BSN degree from Harvard or Yale etc, even if its just stare at it and feed my ego!!! But realisticly speaking I would probably apply to one of the traditional universities in florida for the in-state tuition perk, or should i go small and private? Or maybe one of my fellow RN's know of a out-of-state, affordable program. Sorry if this is a bit out of whack, im typing this during system downtime at 0440 on the third day of a three day night shift. IV beeping gota go... I got to start an NG tube, take one out, place 4 IV's, do a bladder scan, and assist a MD with a PICC line placement...so freaking cool, I LOVE THIS CAREER!!!

Grad school...I doubt it. I'm definitely getting my bsn but after that being that I'll be 39 that will be it for me. Yes I know 39 is still young, but I've spent most of my life in and out of college in and out of jobs and I finally found my passion. So for now I kinda want to enjoy life lol...I do want to grow within nursing. I really like the heart how it works, pretty amazing we have a self sustaining pump in our chest. I'm thinking cardiac icu in 2 years or so.

Hello all, Newish nurse here, less than a year experience, was wondering what some nurses do for extra income. I have been doing OT, and waiting to hit my year mark for per diem. I tried Home health but the time in was not worth the money out. Thank you for your replies.

Hi all, New grad here, started my first job 2 months ago on a Med/Surg floor, absolutely love it. Love the job, love my bosses, love my coworkers, great residency program, great pay, etc... I have been looking into different certifications like chemo/oncology, however most say minimum1-2 years experience. Are there any cert's I can apply and test for right away? Any suggestions on which cert's I should attempt first? Thank you
  12. Seen a lot of posts on this topic, very confusing. I just passed my exit exam and I am preparing for the NCLEX in Florida. I have the following books provided from my school 1. KAPLAN-The Basics 2. Saunders 5th edition- and the CD 3. Saunders 6th edition-NO CD 4. Pearson Comprehensive review for NCLEX-RN 5. My school is buying me a 5 week review course on NCSBN. 6. All my school texts, medsurge, pharm, fundamentals, etc. 7. Lippincott Q&A Review for NCLEX-RN 11 edition. 8. Enormous amount of test banks, EXAM CRAM questions, and other free stuff I have received from former students. I have used all the books at one point or another but not in their entirety. I am thinking about adding either Lacharity or Kaplan Premeire 2015-2016. Any suggestions? Am I over doing it? I would really like to pass the first time. If your wondering how my school gave us so many books, in two years we had about 8-9 DON's, NO JOKE, and each one had a different favorite NCLEX review book LOL. Thank you for your help.

  14. Hello, I am a 36 year old nursing student with 6 months to go till NCLEX> When I started this journey I had my heart set on CRNA, I was able to shadow one for a few days in a hospital and loved it. Since I started the journey to become a nurse I have gravitated towards ARNP for the simple fact I cannot work as a CRNA and well at 36 (no kids) I do not have that luxury. Is it feasible? (take out emotion) My GPA hovers around 3.5 pre and during nursing school. I do not want a dream to turn into a nightmare. Thanks in advance for the advice.
  15. 32 started, 10 are left, 75% overall to pass the class, my pharmacology class was only 6 weeks long. So um yea I am not in your run of the mill nursing program to say the least, I THINK>
