Hello
I am going to be a new grad in December and, hopefully, pass my boards in Jan/Fed. I am moving to MN, twin cities, at that time to be with my fiance. I read the prior discusions about the cities not hiring? Is this true? Also dose anyone know or recomend a good hospital to work at? Are there any new grad programs around to twin cities? And what are the staffing ratios like in MN? I am in Ca right now and they are about 4-5 per RN, unless your on a Med-serg it can be up to 8 per RN. Thanks!

Hi Sam!
I am not in the cities, so really cannot comment on new grads, other than one of our new grads who came home to us because of no job offer in the cities. We were happy to hire her, and not just because we knew her!
There are many good hospitals just outside of the cities that may be an option too. (Buffalo, Waconia...)
Good luck! I'm sure you'll find something!:)

I have looked at various individual hospital web sites all around the Twin Cities and they all have tons of jobs posted.

My advice would be to try out our salary wizard tool at:

Here is a link for nursing in the MPLS - ST. PAUL area:

I live south of the cities, but our hospital stays competitive with them. We just got a raise for that reason too. New grad nurses start around 24.00 right now, but after the raise will increase it to 25.75-26.50.

I graduated in May of 2004 - still no job. However I live 2 hours north of the cities. But I've had friends (new grads - no prior exp) try to get jobs in the cities and no luck. Hopefully that will be different for you. Happily I accepted a job in Tucson AZ so I can FINALLY start working. Unfortunately hospitals can afford to be very competitive in MN. Which sucks for us new grads with no prior exp. My advice is to start looking for a job NOW. Don't wait. That apparently was my downfall. Anyway good luck!
When I got out of school in 96, as a new grad, I couldnt get a job in hospital without experience either, I had to start in nursing home, then hospitals wanted acute care experience, so I got a job at a long term acute care facility, and that was finally enough experience to get into hospital nursing :) Good Luck!
Do nursing homes pay pretty good? As a RN in a nursing home what are our duties? Are we to do the work just like a CNA

From what I've seen, the nursing homes pay better than the hospitals.
Oh, really I was thinking the opposite. Nursing homes pay more, I thought that hospitals pay more because it is so much harder to get on in the hospital.
I know, you'd think it'd be the opposite, but that's what I see and hear. Weird.
