New Grad- Stay in Memphis or move?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

I think I know what the answer will be to this, but I still want to put it out there. I currently live and go to school in Memphis. I'll be graduating in May, and I currently have two paid externships at two different hospitals. I am fairly certain I will be offered a job at both of them (CVICU and OR). My fiance lives in Boston and wants me to move there asap. I've tried explaining to him the job market situation up there, and he says he will financially support me while I look for work. I'm not really sure if I want to go that route and give up a sure thing here and may become and "old grad" while looking for work in Boston. We've been doing the long distance thing just since August and I think I could stick out a while longer. However, he is also a MD for a hospital system in Boston. I know I could use his connections to help me get a job, but I am not sure I want to go that route or not.

So opinions?

If you have connections, it may be worth it. I came here knowing no one in the health care field and it's been a challenge.

Don't do it. I went to school in Orlando and moved to Boston with my husband. I graduated in May 2010 and applied for thousands of jobs and never even got an interview. I also work as a tech at an ED on the North Shore of Boston and work with at least 5 others who have a BSN and cannot find a nursing job. I decided to move back to Orlando and got a job within a week. I would strongly advise against Boston. Especially if you have connections in Memphis.

Nursing departments in large hospitals are not influenced by doctors recommendation, if you work a year you will be able to get a position especially with or or icu experience. The job market is horrible.

So are you and your husband commuting back and forth?

The job market here for new grads is horrible... even for ones who have connections, even for ones who have worked as CNAs ... Many from my class who graduated in May 2010 still don't have jobs, and a whole new crop are due to graduate in just a few short months. Stay put!

Memphis Tiger,

We are also doing long distance and commuting back and forth. He and the dog stay in Boston and I am in Florida. Since I only work 3 days per week it is easiest for me to fly up there whenever I can to see them. He comes to visit me when he gets his week vacations. He is eventually going to come to Orlando but in the meantime it is best for us to make things work this way. I would have never succeeded with getting a job in Boston. I think maybe if you want to end up in Boston with him, stay in Memphis for now and get at least one year of nursing experience then try your chances in Boston. Good luck!!
