I'm in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, locally known as the Metroplex. The area hospitals pay newly graduated RNs an average starting rate of $23 per hour, which is probably less than what you'd receive in your home state. However, the cost of living in Texas is usually cheaper than living in the Northeast.
Howdy,
I'm glad you're looking in our direction. The Houston area is very new grad friendly. However, I haven't heard much about relocation assistance or student loan payback lately. I think that these inducements may have pretty much dried up in the current market - they're not needed to attract anyone right now.
I love H-town. We're probably pretty similar to cities in your neck of the woods. It's surprising to most people, but we have are a thriving arts center- performing and visual. We actually have more theater seats than NYC (srsly). We don't talk like GW Bush (who does??). We're very diverse - Our petrochemical & health care 'bidness' attracts people from all over the world so we have large populations of Korean, Nigerian, Indian, Pakistani, South American, Scandinavian (srsly), Anzac and Middle Eastern folks.
Housing is waaaaaay less expensive than you're used to. No state income tax. Very hot summers & very mild winters. You will never have to shovel snow or scrape your windshield again. We're an hour from the beach. So, come on down!
If you need additional info, feel free to PM me.
I would say please dont wait until the last minute to apply to jobs now matter what states you are applying to? I have just graduated and was offered a sweet deal to relocate to brownsville,tx or Mcallen tx but I kept looking and will not be accepting those jobs. I found something a bit better in san Antonio, tx Goodluck to you, you will find something start researching now.
Hi all, i got my RN license in CA about 6 months ago but i've been an LVN/LPN for 6 years prior to that. I have a job here in SoCal but i've been thinking of moving to either Texas (San Antonio and Austin area) because my best friend kept on bugging me to move there and or Hawaii. Where is a good place to work in San Antonio? what's the rate? My pay rate right now is $31/hr plus night differential of $5.00....Any advice?

Hi,
I will be graduating with a nursing degree in may and decided that because I live in Mass and the job market is not looking too bright I am going to considering moving. I have never been to Texas but its new and different and I figured I may give it a try. I am just looking on advice as to where to live, apply and where is best places to work for new grads. I am also looking for places that will help pay back some of my student loan debt. I would like to live in a big city like Austin or Houston or Dallas. What is starting pay for new grads? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
