does anyone know of any open houses or career fairs in virginia?

Hello! I don't know if you already looked at my previous post about the UVA New Grad Program on this forum. I recently found out it's for 2011 grads only. You should take advantage of it! Unless you already have? I'm posting the link anyway hope this helps! :)

p.s. they are having an open house Feb 19 Saturday. But you have to RSVP. There are links at the website I gave you.

THANK YOU for that information chickadeepie! I can always rely on allnurses.com for great tips, advice, almost anything! it helped relieve stress before the nclex, and it has also encouraged during my RN position search! I have landed a job, finally! It is all about networking and contacting people that you know when it is in an area where they are "not hiring new grads" or in area where budget is tight. Some areas are very open to hiring new grads, some are just not. In order to get around that, try contacting you friends who are working, your previous clinical instructors, or perhaps professors. You might not land the job, but your name will get around.

To anyone who is reading, I am willing to help you with tips, advice, etc as to what I did to get my job! It was a journey, but definitely worth the wait because it is the floor that I WANT!

Do you have advice for someone with zero contacts in this entire state? I just moved to the southeastern side of DC and I was born, raised, lived my entire life until now, graduated nursing school in Missouri. Graduated Dec 11...still jobless :( and my husband and I are barely surviving on one income! HELP!

Hey, Congratulations! I'm going to private message you. Any help would be greatly appreciated :clown:

Hi RNBSN88, Yes my advice is to network! Network by going to open houses, career fairs, even if it is NOT what you want to work in. Go to craigs list and see if they have something for your area daily. Travel a couple of hours if you can to these open houses. I just accepted a job offer from Sentara. Prior to accepting this job I attended many open houses, career fairs and none of them called me back. Of course once I accepted the job offer from Sentara, I received so many calls from these other places I applied to! I was very surprised and it was unexpected. I sat there for initial interviews knowing you need 2 years experience. The advantage to that is you will get great advice from the person interviewing you, you will get a chance to practice an interview, and the interviewer might even give you a manager's phone number. All of these things happened to me and I have been turned down by so many, but still kept my persistence. My feelings got hurt so many times.

I got my license early in January and finally got a job within a little over a month's time. That may not seem like a long time because there are some people who have been looking for almost a year.

My advice is not to give up. You have to keep pushing, bugging, and annoying recruiters. Like I said craigslist is a good source for open houses. Also try to contact your clinical instructors from nursing school. some of them might be nurse manager or more than likely will know some.

I hope that you keep your head up and best wishes. message me anytime!

Thanks for your advice but I haven't found any career fairs or open houses. I'm in the Southern DC area. And I graduated from MO so my instructors and nursing school is absolutely no help here. Also have applied to everything even if it said experience required but have not gotten a single interview.

Did you attend the career fair at Sentara?.. Do you know of any other job fairs in Northern Virginia?

thanks

I did attend the job fair at Senatar Potomac Hospital but was told upon arrival that it was only for "experienced" nurses and that I did not qualify. Hence, I was not even granted an interview.

The NVCC Medical Education Campus in Springfield is having a job expo on Thursday, March 3rd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Recruiters from various facilities in the area (including INOVA, Virginia Hospital Center, Kaiser Permanente, and Children's National Medical Center) are scheduled to be there. They're apparently looking for May 2011 graduates. Good luck!

No I did not attend the Potomac open house. Yes, I heard they were turning people without experience down due to the overwhelming turnout of experienced nurses.

I would try to go on craigslist and see if they have some announcements. I have also received replies when I put an ad for myself on craigslist.
