Hi, I'm new here and new to nursing! I graduated in May 2014 and passed my NCLEX in July. I just accepted a school nurse position at an elementary school and am a little nervous about it since I don't have any experience. I did a lot of my clinical time in the emergency department but not a whole lot of time with kids. I am good with kids and am comfortable treating them though. Was wondering if anyone could give me some good tips going into this job and any suggestions on materials/ books that I could use to better prepare myself. I appreciate any advice or ideas!
Thanks!

I've found this text very useful: http://www.amazon.com/School-Nursing-A-Comprehensive-Text/dp/0803622090/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414282139&sr=8-1&keywords=school+nursing+a+comprehensive+text
Review your standing orders so you know what you can and cannot do.
Asthma, diabetes, ADHD meds, seizure meds and epipens are some of the big issues in schools.
Review EpiPen administration on Epipen's website.
Review this information on asthma: The Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey
Review lung sounds so you can assess for wheezing.
If you have any diabetics, review glucagon administration.
Good luck! :-)

Just a thought, you may also want to review head injuries, fractures/sprains and what to do :)
Congrats on getting the job!

Make sure you know about 504's and IEP's. Also, food allergies and how to handle in the classroom and cafe.

Concussion protocols!
(Wait, I read your OP again and saw you are not HS, but Elementary school. Concussions hopefully won't be as much of an issue.)
Ummm...Immunizations!
