I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Nursing in May of 2009 and passed the NCLEX RN in July. I have been searching everywhere for a facility in the Las Vegas area that is willing to hire a new graduate and have had no luck at all. I can't even find ONE upcoming new grad program. It is very discouraging. Has anyone else in the area had this same problem or does anyone have any advice or inside information that I may be missing? Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated :redpinkhe

I hate to say this to you but, you are one of many. All of my "new graduate friends" have either moved out of state (still looking for work) or working just above minimum wage jobs. Several people THEY know went back to jobs they had before they got into nursing! It's really sad to hear an RN graduate working for companies other than medical facilities.
Yeah, I figured that. I actually recently moved to Vegas from Massachusetts for my boyfriend who relocated for a job, so moving isn't really an option for me. Guess I may resort to flipping burgers after all! Just kidding.... maybe.

honestly it is very tough right now. I say apply to every position you can. Whats the worst that can happen?
As far as I know, the unemployment rate of MA is not as high up as NV. It really is depressing, the last count I've seen is 13.4% for las vegas and for the whole state of NV, it's like 13.2%?? I know it's NOT under 13%, that's for sure. We are up there w/ MI and CA, the hard truth is (really)...... NO ONE knows how to fix it. Wouldn't be shocking if the gov. just declares NV is broke! OR he just says, NV is B-r-o-k-e-r than E-v-e-r.

I'm in the same predicament! I moved here because my fiance works here and I have no clue what I should do! I can't tell you how many positions I've applied for and if I'm lucky, they'll acknowledge it with a rejection email. Honestly, I feel that they see my graduation date and throw away my application without looking at my experience, references, anything. So frustrating.
First of all, congratulations on graduating! When it's so hard to find a job because we are new grads it is easy to forget the accomplishment. I feel the same way though- I'm lucky to get a rejection email. And on top of it all I hear that after 6 months in Vegas you are not considered a new grad anymore, so you're not eligible for a new grad position AND you still may not have any experience. I mean, there is not ONE new grad program out here and EVERY position requires at least one year I feel stuck. And the worst part is that I KNOW I am a dedicated employee and a good nurse. The only problem is no one cares to give me a chance.

we are actually in the same position right now... hospitals keeps on requiring one year experience how can gain it if no one is willing to hire me... i tried applying as volunteer but the officer said it is not suggested for an RN to "just" volunteer, she told me to keep lookin for jobs... even homecares doesn't hire nurses without experience.. even clinics! gggGGGgggRRRRrrr...

Is it possible this is just happening in "certain" states w/ high unemployment? Have you tried to go up north? Maybe Vermont? I read somewhere that VT is 'richer' than most states? I'm not sure exactly why. But, I know that the unemployment rate there is a LOT less than NV.

I haven't tried out-of-state but i heard it's easy to get employed in Florida and Canada... My RN license is for Nevada, i dont know if they would hire me in other states using that license or i need to take their state exam too..

FYI you will never have to take NCLEX twice as long as you already have an active license. You just have to file out a bunch of paperwork and possibly get fingerprinted again. If its something you are considering then start trying to get a license sooner rather than later.
It's a national exam so you would not have to take it again, but you would need to transfer your license. So if looking out of state is something you are willing to do, all you would need to do is find out that state's requirements to transfer :)
