I'm starting my first RN job on Monday! It's hospital orientation. I took a job in the ED, but now the L&D might have an opening for me and wants to talk to me before I start. I have experience in both areas as a labor doula and an ED nurse extern. I love both areas. I've always wanted L&D, but my mind had kind of settled on ED as a good area to get a broad range of experiences that I could one day take with me to L&D. A friend of mine in the ED got me the interview, so I don't want to seem ungrateful either... It might not work out, but I just want some more insight if I do have a choice!
One more point, openings in the L&D do not come often. I hear people love it there (at this hospital).
Labor and delivery- you learn about one system, but still get the emergency coping skills. Anything can happen any time, and you'll have to make it work. BUT- try to float elsewhere so you don't lose all the med/surg knowledge.
