new grad relocating pittsburgh

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

I am a nursing student in Texas, and I will move to Pittsburgh after I graduate.

I wonder what's the chance to be hired as a new grad nurse in Pittsburgh? Which hospital(s) in Pittsburgh take new grad?

Thanks in advance!!

When I was applying to the UPMC system 2 or 3 years ago, they had a few GN positions available, some that didn't necessarily require experience, and lots that did. I applied to everything, and got a job in one of their rural hospitals. Pittsburgh also has Allegheny General Hospital, but I don't know much about them.

I went to school at the University of Pittsburgh! I loved living there and only moved to be closer to my husband down south or else I would've stayed. Just be prepared for a lot of competition if you plan to apply to UPMC facilities. Not only do they favor Pitt grads, but there are two other universities within walking distance of UPMC that are all looking for jobs as well. I would definitely still apply but don't limit yourself to that one hospital network. There are other hospitals like the one mentioned and Jefferson Hospital that are just outside the city and may not have as much competition. Good luck with your search!

Thank you for your response! I know Uni of Pitts is a really good school! great nursing program! Do you mind if i ask what was your GPA like when you graduate? and how difficult was it for you to find your first job?

Thank you so much for your response!

I had a 3.2 GPA when I graduated got nothing but A's and B's but I also worked as a PCT so I wasn't just focused on school. I haven't landed a job yet. Unfortunately the city I moved to has the same issue with Pittsburgh in that there are several nursing schools surrounding the area so the major hospitals tend to favor their own graduates. Had I stayed in Pittsburgh I would've landed a job before I graduated but unfortunately staying in Pittsburgh wasn't the plan! I have recently had more interest and had a few interviews so it's hopefully looking up soon! If you can help it, staying and working where you graduated for a bit to get experience is what I'd personally recommend. You'll have the networking already in place and have a much easier time finding a job!
