New Grad Programs in Australia?

World International

Published

Hello all! I have always wanted to live in Australia and I have heard they are in need of nurses right now. I will graduate in July from a program in the United States and hope to move down there but I am in search of New Grad programs. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated

Hello Physteac: Thank you for the information. I live in Adelaide and I am moving to Melbourne next month. Actually, my husband got a job over there and we have to move everything including two young kids!!. I am quite sad because I have to leave my job (doing GNP in Adelaide from March 2010) and apply for a position in a GNP in Melbourne. In Adelaide mostly we dont have to do interview for the GNP. I am quite nervous as I have to do that. If you could give me an idea what do I need to prepare for the interview it would be really appreciate.

Thank you very much

Cheers

Yes, this is very confusing as it seems that all of the Governing bodies for Nursing are under reaccreditation as well.

@chochis: Hi there, I was wondering if you are aware of South Australia's ARNTP program at the University of South Australia. Will they still be opening for intakes? Do you happen to know when? I will be going to Adelaide come early next year to study and register/ work there as well... Hoping you can help me.

excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is a graduate nurse program?

I am in the US, in California. A graduate nursing program is any degree after you Bachelors. It can be a MAsters degree or a PhD in Nursing. A Masters degree can result in a Nurse Practitioner license or a Clinical Nurse Specialist or the new Clinical Nurse Leader....designation. Some schools have even brancehd into specific Nurse Practitioner and CNS programs. I am starting the Critical Care/Trauma CNS Masters at UCSF this Fall 2010...I hope my answer helped. Do you have Masters programs in AUstralia? How is life there? Crime is getting higher in the US...especially in California...and our economy is terrible nowdays!

Nah, graduate nurse programs here are not via a university degree, you obtain a position in a hospital or health provider will provide preceptors and study days for the the new graduate nurse...a transition from uni nurse student to nurse with experience and you also get the lowest pay that an RN can receive.

Life here is ok....not to much talk of recession but I am sure it will come...especially with the government we have had for the past few years. I think nursing jobs are still about, depending where you want to live..in rural areas there seems to be always a need for nurses.

As for nursing being "behind the US" that always seems to be advocated here by some posters the bottom line is, how good is the health system you are working in for joe blow with no money (after all nurses are suppose to care about socio economic equality in health), how good is your pay?, and how good is your patient ratio, Do you have one? Can you get a job without much hassle or is it cut throat? When you want to specialise does your hospital more times than not support you and give you experience in that area, and do you have to pass an exam everytime you want to be considered a specialist in that area and to register with yet another governing authority? I think we are on a different planet when it comes to nursing...compared to the US of course..!!

Most specialists nurses obtain a grad cert or grad dip in that speciality. As for getting first time nurses registration through a masters is happening in most states and grads are now in hospitals and other health organisations. It seems though, through 3rd hand talk....that many of these nurses do not want the dirty jobs, want managerial positions, gee 5 years of uni to be a generalist nurse, I would want to toss shift work as well. :yeah:

No, nurses do not administer anaesthetics here, I suppose many other things, if we are comparing to the US, we do see it as medical role. as the anaethetist, here is held responsible for the clients conciious state and perfusion, for about the next 24 hours, nurses do not get paid for this, until a nurse got the same wage as the anaethetist or doctor, why do the work? Just imagine how the hospitals would use that position up.

We do not need a masters to specialise in anything, accept vice chancelor or something high up in academia, of course many nurses to obtain their master in their specialty. We are not governed by stacks of exams to some speciality organisation to be a specialist in that area, just do the grad cert or grad dip. Is this backward? nah just not so much big brother controlling, watching. Our pay is ok not the best compared to the doctors, but ok. Yes the AMA stilll thinks it rules nurses, but we know better....and things have changed alot. Soon nurses in remote areas will be able to prescribe some drugs without being nurse practitioners....much to the AMA's disgust. I do not think we are 'behind the US'" we just do our thing quietly, without fuss.

But like everything else I suppose this will change over time, after my time....I am proud to be an Australian Nurse. We are the most trusted people, according to yet another poll in professions and we don't want to loose that support of our fellow Australians.

And if these forums are anything to go by, it seems everbody else wants to work in Australia as a nurse as well.:lol2:

Hope ALL you that are busy writing in your application that you are through and through, trustworthy.

The perceived backwardness of the place.....this seems to be a paridym left over from the convict era by the UK up to about the 1970's, but continues on by others. ;)

Thank God my grandfather emmigrated to downunder,, thanks gramps, love ya :)

As for crime. oh my God....this is everywhere...people do not have respect for anyones else's values, nor humanity, or respect others..... ..we have so much crime that I now refuse to watch the news, but I bet its no different to any other place. Muggings, stabbings, etc. this is not a paradise with no crime. I have just been reading about a Nurse manager of ED at a big Sydney hospital being murdered on her front porch.....so don't fool yourselves about crime being any less here....

Sigh, sigh, thank you for your answer. It seems that in the US we are going form Associates degree to Bachelors to Masters...I am in Livermore CA which is in the Bay Area US and about 1 hr from San Francisco. I am a new graduate...and have been blessed to be accepted in a Masters program at UCSF and in the specialty I wanted....my gol is to continue to the PhD and conduct research/teach at the University. I am going into the electrophysiological field and need experience (and money although not starving yet).

The crime is getting higher, the economy is hossible and there are NO jobs for new graduates. Just in this area we have about 8 colleges pumpng students out, about 5 universities, and another 3 universities offering MAsters programs....some have classes coming out twice a year...as the economy got worse the nurses that were working decided to stay (don't take me wrong good for them), some lost their money in the stock market, some their husbands are not working, and yet some others came back to the field (for the same reasons). The bottom line is that class of 2009 and now class of 2010 don't have jobs...and the newly learned skills are fading...and new grads are soon been called "old new grads". No one wants to give a chance, be hospital, clinic, long term, sniff, nursing home, traveling, or home care, or schools, or prisons, or anything....and the skills are fading. This is even worse becasue we are really really pounded (made work really hard in our studies) and you get out trying to make a difference and nobody wants you...I know it will turn around and are glad to be going back to school, maybe in between or after I get out it will be better....I am glad to hear you are doing better in Australia...and I read you have awesome beaches...!

Yeah, I suppose this really is the 'lucky country'at the moment. At my place of work we have all just been put up into a higher grade, without going for the jobs,, with back pay,, yippee. As for new grads I think it is still ok,, I have not heard of any cutbacks to grad programs here in Victoria anyway.

Re: Number 7 and Eastern Health

I also did a graduate year at Eastern Heath (Maroondah Hospital) The practice development unit is not there to help you as you need them. You will be treated like crap if the A Team or so called angels find you intimidating or just dont like you, most grade 3 or 4's will try to eat you alive. Why i do not know?

I have seen PDU and the senior nurses treat Grads badly, they are very condescending and treat you like you know nothing pushing your confidence to the ground.

I remember being told off in my 3rd rotation in front of my patients because **** from PDU in her opinion thought i should have written TLC on a ladies care plan, absolutely ridiculous. I hear Boxhill is a much better place for learning or southern health.

Also i was messed around with my rotations PDU changed them 3 times on me in the end i had 3 medical rotations no specialty no surgical...i hate medical. And to top it off i hurt my back due to the very old equipment and very over weight patients also the negligence of the cleaners who insist on washing the floor in the morning. When my grad year finished the Hospital would not continue my contract due to my work cover applications. Maroondah Hospital is not a good place to work....go figure!!!

Daer SC-RN: That sounds awful!! That is bulling!! I finished my degree at Adelaide University and my placements were at teaching hospitals mostly, great placements, only one of them was in a private hospital, terrible experience!. Anyway you did it!! I know how you feel. I did think that public hospitals were the best place to get a GNP position in Victoria. What about private hospitals?? Have you heard anything about them? All the best whatever you're doing.

Dear Chochis, Sorry to hear you also had a bad experience. Funny enough i did start my grad year at a private hospital but it was too small and the clicky the nurses had been there for 20 plus years, so i resigned and went to the public hospital which yes they were bullies. I have done agency work at Epworth in Melbourne it is a private hospital and i would work there or recommend someone to do a graduate program.

I don't know how nurse can treat their own the way they do, its something i could never do, I'm nothing but helpful to new employees.

I did my 3rd year at Unisa and now doing a post grad in health at Flinders. Looking back now i wish i did my clinicals in Adelaide i have heard really good feed back from peers regarding the support you receive. have you completed your degree yet?

I do hope the new grads coming through do get an easier time and enjoy their graduate year!

hi there buran,

here in victoria, all graduating nursing students (3rd years) will be given a chance to apply for a graduate program to 4 hospitals of our choice through computer matching (internet based). this process is the same as the medical students finishing their medical degree.. so, application will open on a certain date and closes at a certain date to give everyone ample time to apply. although it is advisable for everyone to go for graduate program, it is still our choice not to participate...you may ask what's the advantage of participating to the grad programm. first and foremost, you have a 1 year guarranteed paid job as grade 2 year 1 rn as most likely to get a permanent position thereafter..to give you a better idea of the program i am attaching here the program of where i am currently working. hope this will help you and give you a better idea about it..one more thing, overseas trained nurses can only apply if they are already registered as a nurse in victoria after completing the bridging course.

acute medical/surgical nursing stream – no specialty rotation

graduates who do not wish to undertake a specialty rotation can elect to undertake three medical/surgical rotations which can be tailored around your areas of interest within acute nursing.

emergency department twelve month graduate stream

maroondah hospital has limited positions for graduates to undertake their entire twelve month graduate program in the emergency department rotating through all appropriate areas including the main department and the short stay unit.

graduates are given further support and education opportunities to enable them to integrate and become part of the emergency team. graduates who undertake this program would be looking to further specialise in emergency nursing with the view to undertaking post graduate studies in emergency nursing in the near future. graduates who wish to apply for this stream must still apply through 'computer match'. graduates who were unsuccessful for the full time emergency stream could still be successful in obtaining a rotation through the emergency department within their graduate program.

acute specialty stream

graduates will undertake two medical/surgical rotations and can elect to have one specialty rotation from the specialty areas listed above. every effort is made to give each graduate their first preference but this is not always possible.

acute campus medical/surgical stream

graduates can elect to rotate to another eastern health hospital for one rotation during the graduate year. this must be negotiated through their home campus graduate coordinator who can check the viability of this request and organise for the appropriate rotation.
