New grad program at Stanford, El Camino, Sequoia or UCSF? What do you think?

Published

Hi there,

I was wondering if there are any RNs that have gone through the new grad program at:

Stanford Hospital (Palo Alto)

Lucille Packard Children's Hospital (Palo Alto)

El Camino Hospital (Mountain View)

Sequoia Hospital (San Mateo)

UC San Francisco Med Center (San Francisco)

1) How long was the program? (4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months or more?)

2) Did you like it?

3) Did you feel like you got the support you needed

4) Were you working 3 -12's, 4 -10's and did you work evenings, nights or days or did you rotate?

5) What advice would you give to someone on how to choose a new grad program?

I will be graduating next summer and wanted to hear from some RNs who have gone through the new grad program. Thanks much!

I did the Versant program at LPCH. It was 6 months long. Overall I liked the time spent on the unit and felt supported. The classes were boring and not evry effective. Clinical time is what mattered. In our unit we rotated days and nights every month and did 12 hour shifts. LPCH and Stanford are highly regarded hospitals. This was my first choice, so I immediately accepted my offer without waiting to hear from other hospitals. Good luck!

Thanks! When you rotated, did you have to go to your lecture portions during the day and then work at night? I am wondering about how it will be to be on "days lecture" and "nights working clinical" at the same time. Or did you do days for lecture AND clinical for the first two months (for example)?

I am also looking at Stanford. I understand they have a 10 to 12 week training program, but did not know if I would have to do the "days lecture" and "nights working clinical" at the same time. Many thanks!

I had my final semester preceptorship clinical at El Camino's NICU. I loved it there. The nurses are so very nice and helpful. The doctors were great also. However back then I was told they didn't have a New Grad program. However later on when I went to the El Camino Open House, I found out there was a new grad program for adult med/surg and that L&D, Maternity, and NICU departments were thinking of adding a new grad program, but it isn't a sure thing. Sorry, I don't know too much about how the med/surg new grad program is structured.

How often does El Camino hold an Open House? I didn't see anything listed on their website. When did you go? When are they starting their new grad program? I also thought they didn't have one... Thanks.

I'll be finishing my ADN in May '07 (I have a BA - Business Finance) and I am looking at SF Bay Area new grad programs, too.

I saw this about the UCSF New Grad program.

Have you learned about any other programs?

Regards,

Ken
