New Grad Positions?

Hey, does anyone know of any hospitals that are welcoming new grads in Massachusetts?

They say 80% of jobs aren't posted to the public, so maybe some nurses out there that are working at hospitals that are hiring new grads can help!

Hi Michelle, not sure where you got that statistic but I don't believe it's accurate by any stretch. I don't know a single hospital in Massachusetts taking new grads, especially if you don't currently work as a tech on that floor.

The statistic is all over the place on the internet. I've seen it on other career sites that give advice for getting jobs.

I have friends that have been hired into Boston hospitals as new grads - either they got lucky or they precepted on the floor that they were hired onto. It isnt impossible, but it is close.

Michelle those authors definitely haven't lived in the Boston area then. If commuting is an option I really would look into Portsmouth Regional Hospital or Parkland Medical Center. I work for one of these hospitals and they were willing to take me on with some persistence. It paid off because I'm flying through my orientation. I've been on the floor for two weeks and learned so many skills. I'm taking 2.5 patients completely on my own and bouncing off my preceptor when needed, became IV certified yesterday, and I'm taking PALS on Monday. I've hung blood twice, pushed tons of IV meds, assisted with a pediatric VCUG, and stabilized and assisted in the transfer of two children to Children's Hospital. That's after nine months of not working as an RN in a medical setting! Your skills stay right with you until you use them, you really don't lose them altogether. I would really think about looking into one of the two hospitals, there's a new grad application listing right on the job openings page. It's a lot less money than MA, but at least it's something.

Many people suggest looking into the hospital where you completed your clinicals. They already know you and, if you made a good impression, they'd have no problem in hiring you; assuming they're hiring of course.

And I also hear that before you graduate, your school give you some orientation and helps you with job search tips and some other things like that. I'm not 100 % sure on that because I havent graduated myself nor have I gotten any such orientation, but many people say that schools will help you as far as that goes.

So there is some hope out there, you just gotta make sure you dig deep and know that persistence is key. Everyone starts out as a new grad and they got someone to take a chance on them, so why not us right?

I graduated in December.

And I am moving to Mass, from Maine, so applying to where I had my clinicals doesn't work out.

Sometimes you have to explore less traditional, or maybe for some people, less desired options. When I graduated, I was (or so I thought) 100% sure that I wanted to be in an ICU or pediatric setting. When the job search was becoming difficult, I called the DON at a nursing home where I used to be an aide, hoping she had something part time "just until things opened up in the hospitals". She hired me full time for the transitional care unit (sub-acute rehab). I got great training (some of which from an amazing nurse with 38 years of experience in varying areas) and 7 months later, I am absolutely in love with what I am doing. I'm glad I took this job.

Good luck in your search, and don't discount some of the smaller places or different areas of nursing. You'd be surprised what you can find.

I am a new grad (12/08 graduation) at MGH, started in March. It was tough to get the job, and the only advice i have is to NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK! Do you know nurses in any hospitals? Do you know anyone that may know someone that can pass your resume directly to HR/Nurse Managers? Start telling EVERYONE you know that you are looking for a contact within any Mass. hospital and maybe someone will pop up that can personally hand your resume over. The job I got was never posted to the public and I got my resume in to HR via networking, otherwise I would still be jobless for sure.

What floor of MGH do you work on? I heard that was one of the hospitals that has a hiring freeze.

I hear that if you worked in a hospital or nursing home as a cna and then become an lpn or an rn, you're almost gauranteed a position once you're done with school. Obeviously it would depend on what openings the hospital has, but is this generally true? I'm kind of hoping that I'll be hired as an lpn where I work as a cna once I'm done with school. :o Everyone seems to be having such a hard time finding a job even in healthcare that it's scary to think what's going to happen after school's finished!! :smackingf

Good luck with your job search; I hope you find something soon!

You can get a job without being a CNA or intern at a Mass hospital...i graduated in December, moved from Colorado without a job in February and got a job at MGH in March! It can happen... have hope, be persistent!!!
