New grad on a PCU/trauma unit

Published

Any advice? Starting my first job on a PCU/trauma unit at a level 1 trauma facility.

Specializes in Medical Oncology, ER.

ask lots of questions, dont pretend to know if you don't, ask for help when you need it. if you know its risky don't do it. patient safety is #1. BREATHE. and empty your bladder.

Specializes in Palliative, Onc, Med-Surg, Home Hospice.

This is true for ANYONE. Find out how to access the policy and procedures manual and use it. Do not assume that if your preceptor tells you it's okay it is okay. (or the MD or anyone else for that matter).

If you have a conflict with your preceptor, talk to that person first. And if you can't resolve it, ask for a new preceptor.

Congratulations on the new job! I would recommend working things to make your working life easier.

If you plan on working nights, find some blackout curtains and a source of white noise.

Have some ideas on how you will handle meals. A lot of my co-workers love their slow-cookers so they come home to a hot meal, others like to cook large batches of food and take leftovers for lunch. You need to be well rested and nourished to keep up the stamina required in nursing.

What about transportation? If you don't know the area on the drive to work well, study and pick out alternate routes. Check the condition of your tires and windshield wipers if you drive. If you use public transport, decide how early you have to leave home and still have a cushion of time in case things run late.

Thank you all! Great advice!
