Why not Austin? (he-he-he)

I like Austin, but Houston (outside the city 30 miles) is where I love to live.

Hermann just increased from 20.50 to 21.50, Methodist is ranging from 21.60-22.25, St. Luke's is only 21.50.

They are all around the same, just decide on the hospital you would like to work. Best of luck...from a recent grad

Hello everyone!
I'm a new to this TX forum! I am a canadian nursing student wanting to relocate to Houston!! I'll be graduating in August 2004 and will plan on taking the NCLEX and all that jazz pretty soon...
anyways, i have 2 quesions:
1) I spoke to someone in HR at Memorial Hermann today and he told me that the starting wage for a new grad nurse at this hospital was $20.50/hr. I'm just curious if this is an average wage that new nurses should expect? if you're a new grad or knows someone who just started working, i'd love to to know about different wage comparisons!
2) Also, does anyone have any information regarding the reputation of Memorial Hermann and whether this is a good teaching/learning hospital? I'm interested in their L&D internship.

I work in Austin at Brackenridge. I just finished reading an article that Texas nurses are underpaid by 10% and that Austin nurses are 10% less than that. With the two nursing schools here they can hire a new grad for much less than they will pay an experienced RN. The GN pay isn't great either....$18.22....and the cost of living here is outrageous.

I work at Healthsouth - where the nurses, LVN's and RN's are leaving all the time. And I'm next - the pay here is bad - LVN's 12-15 - and RN's 18-22 - with an extra $30-40 per extra shift taken - but they never let you. Austin has lower pay than San Antonio, Dallas, and definitely Houston. Seems in Houston you can almost name your price. But...the trade off is the climate - the horrendous traffic, and the pollution. But there are trade-off's everywhere.

I believe this is right. Two of my co-employees chose to come back from Austin because of the pay salary that sucks.

I worked at Memorial Hermann and their pay is not competitive, but there is a lot of room for lateral movement and you can work up the ranks there. They do like to hire from within. The start pay for a new grad, is as others have said 21.50.hr now.

At Ben Taub the start pay is 23.85/hr. I believe St. Luke's also pays well, and I know that MD Anderson pays well (23.00 - 25.00/hr), but they are only cancer, and I am not interested in Oncology.

Right now, I am stayng at home with my son, but when I go back (probably five months from now) I will seek emplyment in MICU NeuroICU or SICU over at Ben Taub. Good experience with the knife and gun club, and great pay. I would not recommend working regular floor units at Ben Taub. I remember my clinicals there and the care was spotty as the nurses were burdened.

Houston is a great city. I have lived here all my life. Yeah, it gets hot in the summer but you can't beat the cost of living! Imagine buying a 3500 sq. ft. home for $200,000. Also, I hear that MD Anderson, Texas Children's Hosp, and Hermann Hosp offer top salaries in Houston.
