New Grad Nurse With ED Interview Coming Up!!!!!

Hi all,

I'm a new grad who has an interview coming up with an ED. I know it looks bad to interviewers when you have no questions to ask about the job/company you're interviewing for. I did my final practicum of nursing school in an ED, and I've read the website for the ED I'm interviewing with and all the questions I had were answered there. I can't think of anything else to ask. I know I'll probably come up with something during the interview, but I'd feel much better if I went in with a few prepared questions. I need your help?? What were some things you wished you had asked about on your interview???? all suggestions/ideas are welcome. Thanks!!

Some I asked included:

What kind of retention do you have?

What sort of clinical support do you have, eg Nurse Educators, Inservices, etc.

Is there a transition package, and if so what does it involve.

If any of the questions are answered on the website you can prefix it with "there was a little bit on the website, but" etc.

Nothing to add just yet, wanted to say good luck.

I would definately ask about any preceptor/mentor/residency program that they have to help you transition from school to work. As a new grad you're probably not ready to jump straight into a full assignment in the ED without shadowing someone for a couple of months at least. GOOD LUCK to you! Hope you get the spot and enjoy working the ED as much as I have.

Even if it's covered on the website, ask about nurse to patient ratios and support staffing (techs), as well as how long your orientation will be, and if it will consist of any classroom training in addition to being precepted. Good luck!! :)

Donna Cardillo's website offers great tips for nurses, from resume writing to interviewing. Boston College has also posted a list of questions to ask interviewers; most are for any type of job candidate, though a few are specific to nursing.

Good luck!

I had a panel interview and prepared these questions in advance..

- Upon completion of the residency, what shift would I anticipate working, days, nights, evenings?

- What are the 3 biggest challenges for the nurses working in your NICU? (Or in your case-- ED)

- What do you all expect of a new grad RN?

- If there are deficiencies, how are they handled?

- Because I realize many new nurses begin on night shift, I was curious who is available during this time in terms of resources, for example NNPs, neonatologists, residents, fellows?

- What is the units process in regards to staffing for a situation like a low patient census?

- Is it possible to be floated to different units? And if so, which units?

- Will you work with one preceptor throughout the residency?

- What types of certifications are required and within what time frame? And is this paid for by the hospital or are we responsible for the payment?

- Is an IP acceptable if results from the NCLEX are not received yet?

Many of my questions were answered too but it helped knowing I had these prepared..
