New grad LAC USC (ED)

Published

Hi everyone! New grad here thinking about applying to La county’s ED. Has anyone else applied? Or is anyone currently working there? I’m curious as to what the environment is like and how long the training is for a new grad. There is nothing online about there being an official “new grad program” so I wanted to know if anyone could give me information. Anything helps. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I was hired at LAC-USC, not the ED, but I wanted to clarify and help some people as I see it is a often asked question. As of this year lac-usc pays 38/hr for new grads, without differential. You WILL get hired on for night shift, there is a 3 yr waiting list for dayshift. The culture at LAC-USC differs from unit to unit but as a whole I feel it is SO good for learning, people are very supportive and everyone is very knowledgeable.

The hard part is having patience. I accepted my position in March. I just started September 1st. It is a lot of hoops to jump through. I figured I'd make a guideline or something so when people search how to apply this pops up.

  1.  Apply here. You have to have your license, and current BLS.
  2.  Wait for an email that will invite you to take the exam. IT IS A BASIC PERSONALITY EXAM. Do not freak, there is no math, no nursing qs. It's basic.
  3. Wait for them to email you again, saying you passed the exam and are on the eligibility list.
  4. Send an email to LAC-USC Nursing Recruitment ([email protected]) with the following information:
    1. A copy of your license OR a screenshot of DCA's license lookup page
    2. A copy of your BLS
    3. Your resume
    4. A screenshot of your exam results
  5. Call Nurse recruitment (323) 409-4663 and tell them you emailed them, and you'd like to hear what openings the hospital has.
  6. Choose where to interview. Literally. You don't have to do anything else. They will let you know w/in 2-3 business days. If you don't get the job you are free to call back within 10 business days to find other openings. You don't have to choose just one place to interview.
  7. Once you accept they will email you, and ask for more information. They will send you info for the livescan. DO IT ASAP. It took me 3 months to get it processed. I theorize that since they go through LACounty HR you have to wait in line with EVERY LA County Employee to get your livescan.
  8. 2-3 months later they will email you with an appt for health clearances. You can reschedule. They say you must do it w/in 2 weeks, mine was a day late and they didn't care.
  9. They will then call you and let you choose 1 of 2 start dates. For me is was 1st and 16th. I couldn't do either and they let me email an request for the 1st of the next month.

Congratulations you're FINALLY employed at LAC-USC.

How long did it take for them to get back to you after you submitted your application?

2023: LA County eligibility exam to interview invitations was 2 days. There were 2 offers for interview for hospitals, 6 job vacancies in county ambulatory clinics, 1 opening for correctional facilities and 1 on juvenile facility.

Got interviewed at LA General (LAC USC) after 2 weeks of passing the exam and Rancho after less than a week of passing the eligibility exam. LA General offered the job the next day. Rancho offered after 3 weeks. Accepted LA General (LAC-USC), Friday. Went for a Live Scan Monday. Medical was after a week. Start date was 2 weeks after medical.

My oh my. I started the process for LAC-USC in May of last year. 3 weeks after I applied, I got an email inviting me to take their personality exam. I took the exam the next day. I got my results a week later, and I was told I would be placed on the list of qualified candidates. I was also instructed to call the recruiting team in HR to let them know I passed the test. They told me they would be in contact with me and they asked that I send my resume, a copy of my BLS, and a copy of my license information. I went ahead and forwarded what they requested. It took me almost a year to finally secure an interview which I have next week. Upon reading this forum, I see that it takes forever to onboard. Am I going to have to wait another 6 months to a year to start working if they offer me the position? I mean I will if I have to but man, that's a long time. I do have another job right now and I am not in a hurry to onboard, but wow. I am just in shock on how long it takes to onboard, that's even if I get hired. Let me know what yall think or what your experience has been.

I've had a nurse recruiter email me to schedule an interview but I am wondering if these are for new grad programs. They don't mention anything on the email so I'm just wondering how the process is and unfortunately the nurse recruiter let me know that they don't know and I would have to ask at the interview.

What department are you interviewing for? The interviews are conducted by different departments and not specifically for a new grad program. If the department hires you and you happen to be a new grad, then you start a new grad residency.

I am interviewing for L&D

Great insight, thank you!

Hello,

I hope you went well and you got the job ! I have an upcoming interview for PP and was hoping I can get some advice. What kind of questions were you asked? and did you end up getting an offer? Any advice would be appreciated!

More on situational and behavioral assessing if you are a safe nurse.

What will you do if you see a patient unconscious? What will you do first?

A co-nurse asked you to give a pain medication she prepared for her patient, what will you do?

About conflict at work, how did you resolve it?

Your work history, too, will be asked. If you have less than a year experience, they will put you on a new grad program. That's what they told me. Which is good in my opinion since the program is good and it lasts for 6 months.

It was about 10 or so questions but I couldn't remember the other questions. Nothing too technical. No questions on specific medications or procedures either. You got this. Good luck.

Does anyone know when they will start interviews for ICU? I'm hoping to start working by October. 😣

For those who accepted an offer or got an answer from manager/HR etc., what's the hourly pay rate for new grad RNs? Hoping it's not in the 30s LOL

New grads would earn the lowest amount on the "Registered Nurse I" pay scale. Google "LA County Registered Nurse I" and click on the job description, not "Registered Nurse I/Relief Nurse" just the posting that doesn't include relief. It will show the pay range as “$7,677.56 - $11,492.30" per month. County employees are "salaried" (even hourly ones), so the new grad hourly rate gets calculated by taking $7677.56 divided by 174 hours per month, so $44.12 per hour.

Except per the current union contract there will be a pay increase on October 1,2024 (just a little over a week from now), which will put the monthly at $8006.34, so $46.01 per hour.
