New grad LAC USC (ED)

Published

Hi everyone! New grad here thinking about applying to La county’s ED. Has anyone else applied? Or is anyone currently working there? I’m curious as to what the environment is like and how long the training is for a new grad. There is nothing online about there being an official “new grad program” so I wanted to know if anyone could give me information. Anything helps. Thanks in advance!

I don't know officially, but it is an at will state. There is no way they can force you unless you sign a contract saying you'll do a certain amount of time for a bonus or anything else of that sort.

If you're a new grad you will be automatically placed into the new grad residency. I am not sure how often they run the classes but since we will be in class for 1.5 months I imagine it will run about every 2 to 4 months. Once you get hired you will shadow and do a lot of the modular (online) trainings. Then the program starts and its a lot of classes and skills acquisition.

I have my current calendar but since it's the first program they are running I bet it will change as they feel out what works for them.

Are you able to briefly explain what the schedule looks like as of now during the program? 3-12s or 9-5 mon-fri? I will be starting the program but have a job now and unsure whether two jobs will be possible.

I did 2 weeks of didactic m thru f, then 3 12s.

They have mentioned they want to do 2 12s and 2 8s moving forward.  Not sure if they will. I'm now just straight orienting on the floor, no more classes.

ETA: Central orientation and Orchid (corner training) was also m thru f. So expect some m thru f 8 hr shifts in there. But it's not permanent. Took about 2 months to get on the floor straight.

I see, thank you sm for that information! How are you liking it so far?  Does the grad program consist of any skills or sims day? Do you mind me asking for what unit are you working in

I'll pm you.

What questions did they ask at the interview? I have an interview tmrw for postpartum.

Hi there, I'm a new grad and I was wondering does anyone know what are the chances of getting hired at county? I'm really anxious to start working and I've already gone to two interviews and had no call backs. I'm starting to feel discouraged. Does anyone know if there is a high probability of getting hired at LA county?

are the interview for county hospital hard? What are the probabilities that they will hire you?

@NillaWafers, ASN wrote really good step by step instructions on getting hired at LA County on the first page of this thread. LA County is huge with multiple facilities and departments, so you can interview at any of them with openings once you're on the RN I eligibility list. LAC USC is the largest single facility within the County system that hires new grads, but Harbor UCLA, Olive View, and the clinics are options for new grads.

I did apply to LAC+USC and I have an interview on the 14th of this month for the PICU. I'm nervous about the interview. Does anybody have some insight on the exact questions that were asked when interviewed at LAC+USC?

General interview type questions like "Name a time you were faced an ethical dilemma and what did you do in response?” Things like that. Nothing clinical related like "What medication would you use for XYZ?” as far as I remember.

How long did it take you to hear back after you submitted the application?
