New grad LAC USC (ED)

Published

Hi everyone! New grad here thinking about applying to La county’s ED. Has anyone else applied? Or is anyone currently working there? I’m curious as to what the environment is like and how long the training is for a new grad. There is nothing online about there being an official “new grad program” so I wanted to know if anyone could give me information. Anything helps. Thanks in advance!

Anyone know which units are hiring at olive view or la general? Just got my assessment results back, and I'll be sending them over my stuff soon. Just curious.

You'd have to call the recruitment office. But we are probably on a hiring freeze RN dt to Medicaid cuts. At least that's what I was told. No harm in trying.

Oh OK thanks! Does anyone know the contact email for Olive View? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks

Anybody got in that could tell us about how the RN New Grad program is?

Hello! For LAC USC's application process, I just submitted the initial application yesterday around 4pm. Does anyone know how long it typically takes to receive the WSA examination/link?

Also does anyone know the start dates for the new grad program for this year? Do I still have a chance in quickly taking the exam?

Thank you for all your help.

I forget if there are 2 or 3 new grad residencies a year right now, but their start dates have no bearing on your application since hiring is done on a rolling basis. Also, the entire hiring process for county takes MONTHS, so no, you don't have a chance in "quickly taking the exam" to be able to start anytime soon. For reference, I first applied to county in a July and didn't officially start until November. Promotions go through the same application and interview process so even those takes months. My second to last promotion I applied in a September and it didn't take effect until January. My last promotion I applied in May and it didn't take effect until August. The point is, if you literally only applied yesterday, don't expect to start any earlier than September.

NillaWafers wrote a really good step by step of the hiring process in one of the earlier posts of this thread. Even years later, it's still pretty accurate and relevant.

If you get hired, you board in the dept you were hired in until the next residency starts. If you're lucky and the next residency happens to start right away and there's space, then you start right away. But if you miss the start even by just a bit, or the next cohort is already full with the other new grads who have been boarding for months already, then you go into the next one.

I'm not sure how they do boarding in other depts, but in the ER you'd typically get assigned to do tasky things like blood draws, etc. You don't start actually getting assigned booths and managing your own patients until you start the new grad program.

@SquishyRN I really appreciate the information! This is my first time just going through everything, and I can use all the help I can!

2023: LA County eligibility exam to interview invitations was 2 days. There were 2 offers for interview for hospitals, 6 job vacancies in county ambulatory clinics, 1 opening for correctional facilities and 1 on juvenile facility.

Got interviewed at LA General (LAC USC) after 2 weeks of passing the exam and Rancho after less than a week of passing the eligibility exam. LA General offered the job the next day. Rancho offered after 3 weeks. Accepted LA General (LAC-USC), Friday. Went for a Live Scan Monday. Medical was after a week. Start date was 2 weeks after medical.

Hello, do you happen to remember what types of questions these hospitals asked you?

Literally NOTHING has changed about the application/interview process you described 2 years ago 😂 Everything you listed out step by step is still exactly how it works. Even promotions go through the same application and interview process, even if you're still in the same dept, so I've been through this rodeo 4 times already.

Would you be able to give me tips or hints on what kind of questions were asked at LA County hospitals? I have an ED interview at OVMC.
