dmskoka -- if you do an accelerated program, you can't do an externship. I know some people who couldn't do externships end up working as nursing assistants after graduation for experience, but I don't think they're allowed to keep doing that once they're licensed.
I was originally going to to do an ABSN program, but ended up doing a diploma program instead and am glad I did. When I first applied, having the BSN was more important in getting hired. Now, having the opportunity to do an externship is absolutely vital in being hired (everyone I know who's gotten a job did an externship). It's all regional, though, so I'm sure there are places in the country you can get jobs without the externship experience.
I'm starting my externship tomorrow and the hospital is speaking to us as though we'll likely be hired if all goes well, even in this economy. Hopefully that'll be the case!
kemibal -- I heard from someone in HR at my hospital that they hire almost no LPNs (she was saying this to an LPN while I was sitting in the room). If they do hire LPNs, she said, it's for nursing assistant positions. Even when the economy was better, I feel like most of the LPNs worked in long-term care instead of hospitals.

I also was at this job fair and found sooooo disheartening. It was the same response no matter which line you were in, sign your name give me your resume and we will contact you if anything comes up. As I sign my name I realize how many names are on the list. Its so frustrating!Graduated in December, licensed in February, and no interviews. Got a call from Kessler made me think I had a shot have since called back and emailed and realize I am being ignored.I dont know what else to do...I feel hopeless.

Nope no interview at Kessler. The nurse recruiter there called me a few times and had me email him why i think i would be a good rehab nurse, I called him back he said he would call back later in the week to set up an interview and it never happened. I felt like I was being strung along so I stopped pursuing him. I got a job at Raritan Bay Medical Center on their psych floor, it only part time but I am learning a lot.
How is the search going for you?
well I thought the search was going good with a few interviews but no offers! I moved up here from Florida and cant believe how hard its been to find a job. All my friends in FL have jobs after graduating and me I've applied to over 100 jobs and have had 2 interviews with nothing turn up. How do you like Raritan Bay? Glad you were able to find a job. It gives us other newbies hope :)
It is horrible for new grads right now in the NJ/NY/PA area. I was not prepared for how hard it was going to be. I just applied to anything and everything that came up. Raritan Bay was the only interview I had and got the job. It took a good 6 months of hell before getting lucky. Right now I think thats what it comes down to, luck. Hang in there and hopefully something comes by soon.
