You're not alone! Most of the new grads I've met who have tried to find a job in/around Boston have had a tough time of it unless they had a personal connection or worked as a CNA before graduating.
I graduated in May and finally got a job in November at Youville Hospital in Cambridge, which is a long term acute care/rehab facility. There were a couple other new grads hired in Nov & Dec, they may still have open positions. Hang in there, and good luck!
Hi,
How do you like it at Youville? I interviewed at another rehab hospital closer to my home. It really scared me when they said the nurse to patient ratio was 1 to 9!!!!! and there was no code team!!! and I only was going to work with ONE other nurse on my shift!!!
Thanks,
liz

I just graduated in December with my ASN. I've had 2 interviews on at NECM in Boston and the other at Beverly. Both have openings and are expected to make offers. About 1/2 my class has jobs, I think it depends on how flexible you are. Most are starting in community hospitals, not the big Boston hospitals.
Persistance is definately the key, follow up applications with phone calls, and follow up interviews with thank you's and phone calls. Just putting in the app isn't enough. GOOD LUCK!
Thanks for your post!
If you don't mind me asking...how did you land so many interviews at NEMC???I have browsed over the career listings for months, and it always says experience required...did you work as a PCA before graduation????
thanks,liz,RN

I applied online then followed up with a phone call to confirm they received it. Then I waited about a week and followed up with a phone call to check the status of my application. At that point I ususally got put through to the nurse recruiter.
Persistence really is the key.
Good Luck

Liz and Jinx, did you grad w/a BSN or ADN?
For new grads still having trouble finding jobs, what degree do you hold? Are new BSN grads also having the same trouble in Boston?
Hi!
I graduated in May 2007 with a BSN in Nursing. I also hold another bachelor's degree in another field (pharmacy). I have been having a great deal of trouble finding a job over the past 6 months or so, however, just recently, I've started to get calls back. In fact, I have an interview at Fallon Clinic in Worcester on Friday to be a pediatric nurse. So I'm pretty excited about that. However, I won't get paid as much as I could if I worked at a Boston hospital. But I'm determined to find happiness before money!!
Good luck everyone!

Just for an FYI I recommend getting a job as an intern or CNA (every hospital has a different tital) wherever you have an interest in working or shadow where you think you mayh want to work it helps you get your foot in the door and some experience. I worked in an ED as a tech prior to graduation ( best experience ever!) but chose to work in the stepdown instead for better experience and interviewed 3-6 months prior to graduation & accepted the job I failed my boards in August after graduating in May & waited until December to retake them and my manager held my job for me which was great!!

NEMC Sucks!!!!! used to be a great hospital......... Think twice before accepting......worked as a tech there for a year.... the nurses all talk about each other and complain......I was a float......saw it all!!!!:icon_roll
When my husband was in pharmacy school, about 2 yrs ago, his last clinical was at NEMC. He too had only bad things to say about the place. They treated him like dirt! He said there also was alot of talking behind backs also!!!That is what keeps me from applying there also!
