New Grad Job Opportunities Chicago/Suburbs

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

I am a new grad (RN), passed NCLEX 5 months ago. I have applied to every hospital I know. I applied to Chicago, suburban, and East Chicago hospitals near Indiana. I landed one interview at a hospital but did not get the job. I also interviewed with two nursing homes but the nurse to resident ratio was unsafe. I would have been responsible for 60+ people. I understand it is very difficult for new grads to land a hospital position. I am willing to work in ltc but with a safe nurse to resident ratio. I have no shift preference. If anyone knows of any job openings I would really appreciate it. I know you may not want to name names but if you could give me a hint that would be great. I am very frustrated and saddened. I want to work and as time passes I no longer will be considered a new grad. I need a job, any type of help is gladly appreciated.

Any luck with job hunting yet? Try not to get discouraged (hard as that is). It's difficult everywhere to find a job - my husband has been out of FT work for 2 1/2 years and my aunt just went back after 2 years. Now, as far as advice on finding a RN job, I recommend networking, networking, networking, and persistence. :D I am a fairly new RN (graduated Dec 2009) and started applying to jobs in NW Indiana and Chicago in Oct 2009. I applied for 35 jobs and only got 2 calls for interviews. Both places I got in b/c of networking....one hospital one of my clinical instructors worked there PT and put in a good word for me; the other one my mother was networking for me while she was getting her chemotherapy treatment for her breast cancer!!! I ended up meeting a manager who emailed HR and I landed the interview and BOOM - I had a job! Think outside the box - maybe it's not a family or friend of yours, but maybe a friend of a friend. A lot of places give bonuses for referrals too so there's somthing in it for both of you. GOOD LUCK!!!

P.S. I just switched jobs this month and I got in b/c one of my best friends from nursing school sent my resume and cover letter directly to her manager. It's not what you know, but who you know.

Thank you I will check them out.

Hey, just wondering if you have found a job yet?

Hello. Everyone, I am currently living in Texas and have taken all my pre-reqs for Nursing. But I will be moving to Chicago in September and I would like to know which schools you guys recommended me looking to start nursing. I'm new to Chicago and to be honest I'm scare and nervous, since I will be new to the city. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I currently have a charge nurse position at a nursing rehab facility. Thanks for asking.

re: mother-of-2

i would try the city colleges of chicago. you can earn a rn degree at an affordable cost. their website is www.ccc.edu.

Thank you so much. I would be looking at the websites : )

Hello,

I know this thread is a little dated, but how is everything going in Chicago? I am moving up when I graduate and would like to know how your experience has been. Did you have an IL RN license first or did you apply for endorsement? I am taking my NCLEX in KS in May, and will have to apply for endorsement then. I would really appreciate any advice and an update to your journey.

Thank You!

Specializes in Obstetrics.

I belive you are considered a 'new grad nurse' until you've worked as a RN anywhere. I know that doesn't help much but it does leave you with time? Good luck :(

Hi, do you mind giving me your email address so I can ask you questions on how to obtain a nursing job mainly in illinois.

Yeah, Sometimes it is who you know but you have to do things yourself.
