Hi my fellow nurses and murses,

I am a new grad with no RN experience. I need some really good advice and opinions.

1. A fellowship on a medsurg floor at the top trauma hospital in the state. A little about this...I will get one on one attention. Attend a couple seminars. I get the regular 2 week RN orientation and training and then I am placed on a floor for 4 weeks with a preceptor. Then another 4 weeks a different floor and then another 4 weeks a different floor. So a total of 12 weeks. Afterwards I give them my top 3 places I want to work. For instance 1. Medsurg 2. ICU 3. OB....they said they try to give the 1st choice but if not they will make sure to land me with a job for my second pick.

2. Pediatrics office...this position would be Mon, Tues and Friday 10 hours each and rotating weekends.

3. DaVita Acute RN Dialysis. With the company I would be at 3 different hospitals. The 3 hospitals are owned by the same company just about 15 minutes apart from each other....these are well known hospitals in my city as well (we have A LOT OF HOSPITALS in my city...nursing job shortages whaaaaaaaaaaaat? lol). I would get training for 3 months and never be allowed to be the only RN since I will be working as a acute nurse as opposed to chronic.

I am asking for an opinion because well obviously I cant get my dream job right now but these are all 3 things I honestly wouldnt mind doing if I cant my dream job. I like all these options but I dont know what to pick....I want something that will lead to many opportunities in the future. The average new grad RN here gets paid $22-24. I read online DaVita RNs are making over $30 an hour....I am NOT doing nursing for the money if that was the case I would have picked another career BUT if there are two jobs I really would love and can see myself doing and one is paying higher than the other obviously Id go with the higher one. The money is just the "perks" for me...seriously.

I know a lot of you guys on here are older and more experienced and I would LOVE your insight and input :) Thank you in advance

#1... Gives you broad experience so you will have more options in the future!

Hi there (:

Come on down to good old O-H-I-O! Seriously. I know a girl who did nursing home and just got hired into the fellowship I was talking about and she has her ADN and is currently getting her BSN. I find it odd because in school we were always told ADNs can not find hospital jobs here. But that's besides the point. If I were you I would take advantage now and try to apply down here. It's amazing in Ohio. I wish I could private message you but I haven't posted enough to yet. Right now is the perfect time to apply because the nursing students have not graduated yet. Therefore instead of competing against 16 new grad applicants you compete against 2-3 applicants. Usually the nursing schools here have graduation in the summer and winter so try to avoid applying then but even IF you do you won't have a hard time finding a job.

We have too many hospitals here as well as WAY too many nursing schools. I know my current hospital has been giving incentive hours for months now due to being short staffed with RNs and PCAs. I know nurses who are making bank and taking advantage of this because they are getting overtime as well as the bonus pay.

You have many choices if you come down here. If you were to apply to a Fellowship you would be accepted and I am sure you would be accepted as a staff RN on any floor.

You said you graduated from Chamberlain -_______- is all I have to say to that lol BUT luckily it's a very "valued" school here and students have a good reputation. Hospitals are currently seeking students who have graduated from there. Students I graduated with landed jobs before graduation at their clinical site.

I hope that helped you and the poster above who asked where I am located at. Ohio. No nursing job shortages here and there is so much to pick from. Clinics. Mental Health hospitals. Hospitals. Long term care. Rehab. Correctional facility nursing. You name it.

Also, thank you everyone for the advice. I have round two to the fellowship position this week so I hope that is a good sign. They told me they would give me an answer by this week so I am hoping I get officially hired tomorrow if all goes well.

I have a couple other interviews as well this week and next at different places. Mental Health and Dialysis again.

I agree with the Med-Surg giving me the most experience and then later I can do the others if I please. I think I will get the most out of this position though. I decided not to take the peds clinic position because they offered me $17 max an hour. I do not want to sell myself short as many of my peers are getting $22-29 currently. I have loans for days to pay off and I just don't see myself taking a job that pays $17 when I have other places that interest me as well that are offering me more.

An update on the Dialysis position. I have an interview with the actual hospital after the holiday.

Everything is going great! I landed my refrences and got amazing ones at that. And I have had numerous phone calls and interviews. I will keep you guys updated but I am keeping my fingers crossed for this Fellowship. I should officially know I am hired after Thanksgiving if they decide to have me join their team! (: I truly believe this will open many doors for me in the future as many of you stated!!!

Let me know if you have any other questions for those asking about nursing in my area.

Thanks again for the advice guys! Have a safe and happy holiday. Eat lots and do lots of shopping. Most of all cherish the time you have with your family and cease the moment (:

Oh yeah. I also want to mention that I know a lot of new grads in different states have trouble finding a job. That's not the case here. New grads have no trouble finding jobs. Hospitals prefer new grads for certain positions as opposed to non new grads because they can train the nurse how they want. If that makes sense. It is hard to tell an older nurse that he or she has to do this and that a certain way. BUT they can train a new grad and teach them how they want things to be done their way. Does that make sense? So you won't have trouble finding work here as a new nurse :)

Thanks for your reply [emoji4] I'm planning to move next year late summer/early fall so I'll take Ohio into consideration! And it's good to know that Chamberlain is recognized somewhere! Lol

Where in Ohio are you from? It's good to know that jobs are aplenty. I'm from Columbus myself and do not see the nursing shortage, however I'm still in school and didn't know for sure!

#1 sounds like an amazing learning opportunityy

By far take option number 1... What you have look at is who is going to give you the best foundation. The program offered in option 1 is phenomenal, many facilities do that and many nurses would clamor at that type of orientation. No hesitation, I'd do it. This is the foundation for which everything else you do in nursing will be built off of.

Hi my fellow nurses and murses :)

Just wanted to let everyone know I got hired on the spot right after my second interview for the fellowship! I start Dec 14th :)

I truly agree with you guys and believe this will be a great foundation and make me an amazing nurse!

Since its a med-surg fellowship any recommendations? Should I review and do anything to prepare as a new nurse? Should I pull out my med surg book and start reading and learning? I wanna be as fully prepared as possible. I never expected to ever be a med surg nurse...infact I told myself as well as my peers I would never be caught doing med surg but here I am......the patients in med surg are just like any other patient and deserve love too :) Who knows maybe I will learn to love med surg!!! I am excited and super nervous!

What are things I should be doing and preparing as a new nurse? I plan on buying a notebook to bring with me and write everything I will need....passwords, resources etc etc

No advice from me but I want to say congratulations and good luck!

I thought you had to have ICU experience to work with DaVita.

There's a lot more flexibility in starting out on a medsurg floor and branching out from there. I would take option #1 if it were my choice. Whatever you choose, Good Luck!

#1 sounds like the best choice. It gives you a little experience with 3 different departments and then you get to choose from them.
