New Grad interested in working in psych

Published

I'm very much interested in working in psych. Anyone have any input regarding Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital? I see them advertise occasionally--good place to work? hire new grads? Any other suggestions for a new grad interested in working in psych? Thanks for any input.

I am a new grad and my first job is in psych, I start the 18th I will let you know how it goes.

Good luck.

That's great! Congratulations! Can I ask where? How did you get the job? Apply online, in-person?

Sure, it's at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. I applied online,, but they have a really good online application process. You create an account and then you can check the status of the application. They are really good at updating it too, in fact I knew I was going to be interviewed before they even called to set it up.

The nurse manager on the psych floor did say that working in psych right out of school won't help you later on if you decide that psych is not for you. This made me a little nervous, but after talking to old professors and other nurses they don't think thats the case. So I decided to go for it.

Just wondering how your new job is going? Enjoying it?

So far so good. I really like what I am doing, the involuntary unit should be opening soon and thats the unit I was hired for. I'm excited for it, and nervous at the same time. Not really sure what to expect. Some say it will be about the same as the voluntary others think it will be more intense.

How are things going with you?

I have a question for you. I applied to that hospital as well. Do you remember how long does it take for them to call for the interview? The status of one of my applications to that place has been changed from "pending" to "routed to hiring manager". I am assuming they will call me for an interview, what did your application say right before they called you? The facility is definitely great at updating the status.

I applied to like 10 positions before applying to the psych floor and alot of my applications said "Sorry, not selected", or "Routed to Hiring Manager." I only got a call for the interview on the psych floor. I checked the website religiously so like two hours before I got called for an interview it said "Interviewed scheduled." Are you a new grad? Or do you have experience? Good luck to you.

Thx for a quick response. Yeah, I am a new grad, but I worked in subacute unit in Somerset for about 4,5 months after graduation. I have about 5 years experience as a Tech in RWJUH, 1 year experience in Somerset Medical Center and I used to work as EMT couple of years ago.

Did the position "routed to hiring manager" was the one that they called you for the interview? My application status doesnt change, of course I have like 30 "sorry, not selected" few pendings and the particular one for psych floor for the night shift, full time positon "routed to hiring manager". I wonder how long it will take them to call me.

Yes the position i got first stated routed to hiring manager. Its actually a position on my floor. Well the psych floor is one floor with two units so its my unit, the involuntary unit and its a night position. Two 7p-7a and two 11p-7a. My manager has been on vacation this past week and will be returning Monday so he will probably get your information to review then. Don't get discouraged if you dont hear right away because I am sure he will have a lot of things waiting on his desk when he returns.

Did you not like Somerset Medical? RWJUH wouldn't give you anything even after being there for so long? This freeze isn't letting up at all...bummer.

Thx a lot, my friend actually works there as a Tech at night on the same psych floor. Good that you told me your manager is on vacation, maybe thats why it takes so long :)
