New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hey mate, hows it going? :)

yes it is indeed..however, patience is a virtue..;) there are hirings here and there though, but most of the hospitals are looking for post registration experience on the other hand, you can always apply for a graduate program, actually lots of them...

for those who are not PRs you can always do the same thing @chabeli did...

as of now, other PRs havent got a job yet, as we are still finishing our bp this week, on friday...so maybe after receiving registrations from the nbv i might here good news from them...

there are hospitals who can sponsor international nurses (457 visa)..and there are facilities as well who require the applicants to hold a residency visa...better for you to check each hospital's website or i find the ANF website very helpful..:)

PS: my filipina classmate who is not a PR at all, was just recently hired(i think just this week)...and she havent got a registration yet...so i hope this can inspire us..:)

Thanks for the info. Do you have post registration experience? Are you planning for the graduate nurse program? Pls share also if you've heard of fresh graduates PR with zero experience who are able to find a job or were offered a job. Ty

hi jakey,

if you don't mind me asking. what were the lacking documents? i plan to submit my application this week and i might lack the same documents. thanks! :D

PR- permanent resident. This is the ultimate dream of every people who step foot in aus. It's like the green card. Of all countries, aus is the most strict in granting a pr. They only grant this to people with aus needed skills e.g nursing, med, engr, accts, etc. Last feb there was a reform with the pr processing. It's now difficult to get a pr. Not all professions can be granted a pr either. Well, that's aus. Even your wife/husband won't be granted a pr at once even though you're an aus citizen (i.e. marrying an overseas citizen). She/he will also undergo assessment and if you and she/he doesn't meet the criteria, OMG! Aus is so complicated.

Since you are a PR, certainly you can find a job even with zero post grad experience. just browse the advertisements for RN jobs and you will notice that some companies welcome fresh grads but usually for a part time position or for casual pool ( about 1 in 100 ads ). The rest would require at least 1 year post grad experience and for agency nursing, the minimum is 18-24 months Australian, NZ or UK experience. This will pose a problem for Filipinos seeking 457 sponsorship because DIAC would require a full time contract and a minimum of 45k per year salary before a working visa is granted. Definetely one cannot meet the minimum salary requirement if you work only part time. Agency nursing pays almost twice the running rate of permanent nurses because there are no benefits like paid leaves etc. The graduate nurse program is normally the route taken by new grads and it is not that bad because it pays only a dollar or two less per hour than the regular RNs with one year post grad experience. After a year you can have your pick of employers because of your australian work experience and if want or lucky or competent enough you can go straight to agency nursing. As of this moment, St John of God, Hollywood , Joondalup, Mercy, RPH, and SCGH are accepting applications for GNP. The competition is a bit tough though.

what do you mean by GNP?

what do you mean by GNP?

GNP- graduate nurse program. It's like internship in med. It's for fresh graduate nurses so that they'll have smooth transition to workplace. And it's paid. You'll have an assigned preceptor who'll supervise you throughout the program. The prob with this is that it's very limited. They only take 1-3 nurses per department and here in wa, the GNP slots are not enough for its local students. Sheesh. And upon graduating, it's job hunting again for no permanent employment is offered upon graduating. Don't know with other states but WA is really terrible.

GNP- graduate nurse program.

is it different from bridging and conversion???
