New Fall 09 students- want to hang with me for the next year?

Published

Hi, I just started my lpn clinicals 2 wks ago. I thought it might be cool for all of us new nursing students to be able to share our experiences and maybe lean on eachother in this tough year to come.

I'll start- I'm Ashley, married and have 2 children (2.5yrs old and 7 months) and I am not working right now, thank God. Not sure I could handle it if I were, lol. I'm only in week 3 and I'm already behind in my reading. I don't know how it's possible to get all the reading done, it's very overwhelming. My Nursing fundamentals class text is unbelievable, the chapters are like 80pages each, with very small font, and we have to read at least 4 chapters each week, in addition to the other classes. I've been making myself study for at least 3 hrs every night. Hopefully that will be enough, I'm trying, but wow it's a lot of reading. I bought myself a recorder this last week to hopefully help drill the lectures into my head. And I aced my 1st quiz today in pharmacology. Yay! Anybody else? How's your first couple weeks going? Let's get to know eachother, we need all the extra support we can get :)

Hi all,

I started my ADN program on Aug. 24. So far it is going ok, we have covered a lot of material allready, foleys, injections, med calculations, assesments, NG tubes, sterile techniques, . Clinicals start on Oct. 8. Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone, I'm Valarie and I just started my program on Sept. 30th. I'm 28, I don't have any children but I work nights fulltime and hoping that I can continue to work and do well in my classes. I'm so excited that I found this site, and I can hear other students experiences. Classes are going great for now but we have just been getting alot of paper work and stories from the professors on what to expect. Good luck everyone and I hope to receive and share experience with you all.

Hi Valarie! Good luck with your program, let us know how things go..!

So we had our first pharmocology exam and everyone failed way worse than we did on the Fundamentals exam. Grrr. this is frustrating. The class avg was 62% how horrible is that?? I got a 62! I'm getting sick of studying so hard just to fail. I'm keeping my head up though, because there are 60 students in my program and 98% of are all in the same boat, failing, so they can't fail us all! lol. We'll start to get it soon and it will all start clicking. Hopefully before monday since we have ANOTHER exam;)

How are you guys doing?

Well it's been a month, can't belive how much as happened in so little time. Doing good so far although A fundamentals test got me so bad, I couldn't believe how bad I did on it on my standards but I rebounded with the next test and did very well. I'm tellin you those critical thinking questions will get you! One thing I'm not liking though, is group projects. All our projects that they've given us has to be in a group and I just hate hate hate it, people don't wanna meet they have this to do and that to do, well don't you think I've got my own crap to do too? It's my grade and I'm not gonna rely on these fools to mess it up so I'm doing it by myself pretty much and I'll grade them accordingly when we do the evaluation.

Nursing school is intense, very intense I'm just looking into the future and hope the time goes by as fast as the first month has gone. Oh we start clinicals in nov, I'm a little nervous about that but I'm looking forward to it at the same time.

So it's only been a week for me and it was a long one. My A&P teacher moves so fast I don't think anyone in my class can keep up w/ her. I'm going to have to get a digital recorder. We've had one quiz so far (A&P) and I got an 80% anything below that is failing. So I'm a little nervous about our first exam on Wed. Hopefully I'll have everything down by then. My other two classes (nursing math and english) are going pretty good. So far 3 students have droped out and my class seems to get along well.

I actually bought two books about preparing for nursing school and how to do well on tests that require critical thinking.

holly, what is the name of the book and who wrote it?

Well, tomorrow is my first clinical day in the nursing home. I'm so so so nervous! I hope it goes alright and is fun.

I've had 3 finals already with another one next week. I passed A&P 1 with a B so I'm happy, I could have done better but I'm very happy with my B :D Unfortunately some other folks didn't pass I think 3 or 4 so they're going to be out of the program because in our program you need a certain final grade at the end of every class and if you don't get it that's it. One person quit like the second day of class so with that plus the people who failed we're down to 25/26 people from 30 and the first term isn't even over yet!

We're doing pharm now and you need a higher grade than normal to pass so it's really high stakes so I'm just gonna work harder than ever and pray to god!

Well i'm in week three of A&P I and it is alot. My teacher moves very fast, we have quizzes everyday and unit exams every monday consisting of three chapters! And her exams are designed to trick you if you don't fully understand the material. I got a C on my first unit exam but i have been acing all of the quizzes. I have a exam tomorrow and i've been studying all weekend so we'll see what happens!!! I feel somewhat overwhelmed because i'm tring to study balance out family life. I have three children 2, 6, 10, and a boyfriend who expects attention when he comes home. I used to work fulltime but thank God i was able to resign and get unemployment because i son't think i could have managed!!!! And to think this is only the beginning!!!!!!!

I actually bought two books about preparing for nursing school and how to do well on tests that require critical thinking.

I am so sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. I can't believe how busy school keeps me!!! Anyway, these are the two books I got. They are both by Patricia M. Nugent and Barbara A. Vitale
