New CEP Rubric for Maricopa

Published

Hey guys,

I just saw someone posted that Maricopa has changed the grading rubric for the CEP. It seems like HESI scores matter more than ever (but thank the Lord English scores more points than math :roflmao:) and that GPA is more lenient (you get the same number of points if you have a 3.68 GPA or a 4.0) No more points for the AGEC, 2 points for any degree whether it be associate or bachelor, and no courses in progress as well as only one choice for University (and some have lower GPA requirements than others).

I feel like this rubric could leave a lot of people with the same number of points so I wonder how they'll handle that, and that those of us without a prior degree are gonna have to work our tails off.

What do you think about it, or does anyone have more information?

Hi,

Yes, the new rubric was published in June, I believe. I'm super excited that it's published because prior years have been a guessing game. I will be applying in January and i'm having so much anxiety over getting accepted. I do see how it's possible for a lot of people to end up with the same amount of points. I don't know how they would narrow it down if they have many applicants with the same score. I applied for the nursing pool yesterday and didn't even think about this when I spoke with the counselor. I hope someone on here can provide some insight.

Will you be applying to this CEP cycle?

I like the fact that it is all laid out and easy to see where each person will fall with the new rubric...as stated above, in previous times, it was just a guessing game. In regards to placements and everyone having the same amount of points, last time I spoke with an advisor, I was told that the original time stamp would also come in to play. For example, if there is only one spot left open and person A has a time stamp from August 2016 and person B has a time stamp of December 2016 (and both have the same points) person A would be accepted and offered the open spot first since they have an older time stamp. I was also told its the time stamp of your "original" traditional nursing app, not the second CEP app...with that said, it seems like its an ever changing process, so that could all be hog-wash by now!!! I do know that many of the colleges are transitioning to CEP only (Mesa is one), so that more applicants will be accepted for CEP at any given time.

Wow, thank you so much for that information. Although it does make me a little anxious. I just applied for traditional this Monday and will be applying for CEP in January. I'm sure I'd be last in regards to placements by time stamps if there are many with the same score :(

Basically what I was told by the GCC adivsor is have a 4.0 and place in the 90th percentile on your HESI A2 to be competitive. What have other adivsors said is a competitive point range to be in?

I *wish* I'd had a rubric available when I applied! It was all shrouded in mystery before the release of this new data!! I think the GPA scoring system is probably quite similar, but now it's also tied to the University....although maybe it was before and we didn't know it!?!?

Anyway - to be competitive, we were told to have a GPA of 3.5 and up (but looking at the new rubric I would say 3.68 and up) and have HESI scores in the upper 90% for English and Math. Don't let lower GPA scores put you off though, I know people who got in with 3.2 GPA, for example.

Previously you were allowed to have a class in progress or not started with certain Universities (all your Maricopa pre-reqs had to be done 100%). For example, when I applied I chose to go with Ottawa University, and I had all my pre-reqs done apart from the statistics class that is a co-req with Ottawa. That was acceptable then...I just have to complete that class before I can graduate. If I was to apply now, that statistics class would need to be done.

It's possible that the Universities have also changed their pre-reqs too - last year some of the Universities didn't require *any* additional pre-reqs over and above the ones expected by Maricopa. I would check the CEP webpage and take a look. I know last year, NAU had the most pre-reqs in addition to Maricopa.

Good luck to you all!

Well......yes......a 4.0 GPA and very high HESI will make you competitive, but how realistic is that? Of course some people do have a 4.0, but that's pretty rare.

BTW - the HESI test isn't *that* difficult. It's all pretty basic math and English. Just revise the info in the HESI book and you should be fine!

I will be applying for the traditional program after the upcoming spring semester and finishing CEP classes during summer. I am already freaking out though! This new rubric scares me honestly. I'm very nervous taking huge tests so I was kinda hoping my GPA would really boost me by getting a 4.0 but if you get the same amount of points for 3.68-4.0 then I guess I'm out of luck there!

Wow say it isn't so! That would suck because I know a lot of people have already been waiting for ages. Kind of takes away the point of CEP if you're stuck based on who came first anyways. Especially with this rubric where a lot of people could potentially have the same points. I might think about trying to apply for the Arizona State program at this rate :nailbiting:

I was counting on getting a high GPA to kind of "ensure" a spot for CEP but everyone with a high GPA (3.68-4.0) gets the same points. I assumed the old one was more focused on GPA (3.8 gets in over 3.7) I'm not really a fan of grouping the GPA together although I'm sure it will come in handy for some folks.

I think the rubric provides them with a good starting point. It gives them the top students to select from, so to speak. If they make to need further cuts, I would imagine that's when they get down to the nitty-gritty details, and would select a 3.8 over a 3.75, for example. Hence, every point counts.

If you have a good GPA and a decent HESI score, you stand a good chance of getting in. Worst case scenario, just re-apply for the next round - they make 2 selections a year, so during the period of time your traditional nursing pool application is rolling through the system, you have about 4 chances to get into the CEP.

I am a little confused. What is the original pool application? I still have two in progress classes, but those will be done by the time I am applying for CEP in January. I am so confused.
