New BSN students at MCG Augusta!!

U.S.A. Georgia

I wanted to start a thread for everyone going to MCG in Augusta this summer so we can kind of get to know each other and discuss stuff so we aren't all so lost and nervous. If you are going post here. Some questions I have:

-Where are you living?

-Are you going to the open house on the 25?

-What all do we need to get for school?

-Does anyone know what the curriculum is like there? (i've heard its really tough!)

-When are you moving to Augusta?

Again, this is just for fun so we can all get to know each other! Can't wait to meet everyone :)

yay congrats for all yall that go in! Could yall give me an idea of what your GPAs were....im interested in applying next year and I just want to know if my GPA is competitive enough!

Hey y'all,

I'm going to be a freshman this Fall. I'm planning on applying to MCG's BSN nursing program junior year, but I hear it's super competitive and difficult to get in. Since you all have already been accepted to MCG, I wanted to know the types of things you did that helped you get in to the nursing program. For example, volunteer work? and job shadowing?? Did you do those things before applying to MCG? How many hours of volunteer work and/or job shadowing should I do? And should I shadow other nurses or doctors or what?

Also, what were yall's GPAs your first two years of college?

Application to the nursing program takes place the fall of your sophmore year, right? So I basically have from now until Fall 2010 to do everything I need to to make sure I get accepted.

Let me know what I have to do, please! :)

Thanks!

Hi! I just started the BSN program this summer at MCG! Im not sure what all they are looking for in the admission office, but I can let you know what I did and what some other students told me they did!

First of all I do think GPA is important, but I don't think that is all they look at. I certainly didn't have the highest GPA so I really tried to make up for it in other areas! I worked really hard on my essay and really explained about my determination to become a nurse! I also had people read over and check my essay a lot! I also think most of us did have some kind of shadowing or volunteering exp. Anything that helps you stand out to the admissions people helps! Definitely try to get your app in before the early deadline which they strongly suggest doing! As far as shadowing nurses or doctors, I would personally pick a nurse over a doctor since it's for nursing school, but im sure they would both help. And yes get in the shadowing or volunteering before you apply so you can put it on your app!

Oh and if you had a lower GPA starting out, but it got better as you got into your pre-reqs that means a lot. Thats how I was, my freshman year was challenging for me and b/c of some history classes I had a couple C's. But in my nursing pre-reqs I had all A's and B's and my last semester I got all A's. I would just try to do your best especially in your science classes like A&P and Microbiology! Also go on the closer look tour at the school and ask the assistant dean all these questions! She was really helpful and told us what they like to see! I didn't go till after I was accepted, but I think it would have been helpful to go before!

I can't really think of anything else right now, but if you have anymore questions let me know and I will try to help! Good luck!! :)

Thank you SO much! I can't even begin to tell you how helpful that was! I did the same thing you did, I started out as a business major (which was definitely NOT right for me) and made a few Cs in those classes but once I switched my major I've being doing really well so hopefully that will help! What school did you go to before you transferred to MCG? Oh and how is school going? : )

Your welcome!! Yeah I started out as a psychology major then switched to nursing! My grades got better once I switched. But yes I love MCG! Everyone there is just so nice and so helpful! They really do whatever they can to help you out! I went to Ga. Southern before I transfered here. Good luck with applying and hopefully you'll get in! Let me know if theres anything else you think of!!
