I live in south Mississippi and am considering a move to Miami. My husband is a pilot and has to commute. We are looking at options. My main concern is, "Where will I work and how much can I expect to be paid?" Needless to say, nurses make beans in Mississippi. Can it be any worse any where else? I would really like to work in a not for profit hosptial and would love to join a union. We need and deserve a union for many reasons. (California's got it right.) Does anyone know about the area north of Miami, Hollywood and Hallendale? any input would be so welcome.

Welcome. Moving to the Florida forum where perhaps some locals can give you some advice. Florida is like much of the south, not many unions around.

Hello and Welcome!!

I am a born and raised South Floridian...but this place can be tough. The cost of living and housing is redicuously high. There are tons of hospitals to work at and lots of opportunities. If you want to work in Miami, speaking Spanish is a must. Broward County you can get away with not being bilingual. If you want to work at a hospital with a union the only one is Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. It is the county, trauma hospital. That place is a "hot mess" but a great learning experience. I'm allowed to speak of it this way because it used to have a nursing school that I graduated from. I live in Hollywood and work at Memorial Regional. I like it there.

If there is anything that you would like to know, email me and maybe I can help.

I just moved from Miami, having lived there for 30 years. At first I loved it but as the city grew I started to hate it. It's very crowded, traffic is horrible, and the people can be rude. THe same goes for hollywood, etc. The nursing opportunities are plentiful, and the house prices have come down tremendously. It depends on what you want out of life. I know a lot of people who have left so. florida cause they couldn't take it anymore. Check it out before you make a big move. Take a travel assignment.
