New ADN nurse going to England

Published

Hello, I'm a military spouse. My husband got orders to Mildenhall, England, and we are moving there in a few months. I just finished my associates degree in nursing, and I'm planning to take the NCLEX before we leave. I know that I need to be registered and be accredited by the NMC – United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council to be able to work in England, and that most likely I need to get my BSN.

My questions are:

Do they offer RN to BSN programs in England?

Or is it just better to get an USA online RN to BSN degree?

Is it difficult to get accredited by the NMC?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

NMC is a long drawn out process, also expensive as I see from members posting in the Nurse Registration forum.

Yes there are some places that do RN to BScN and Dundee university is one place that offers it.

Moved to the International Nursing forum

Specializes in NICU.

Unfortunately I don't think it will be possible for you to register with the NMC. They require you to have completed a nursing program "three years in length (or equivalent)" and to have at least 12 months' work experience before applying. (http://www.nmc.org.uk/globalassets/sitedocuments/registration/registering-as-a-nurse-or-midwife-from-outside-eu-or-eea.pdf) You might want to look into opportunities to work through the military using your US license.

Thanks for your help! :)

Hi! I hope you enjoy England, my mum is from there and we lived there almost 10yrs. Because you're an American nurse I would stick to working on base while there. You can keep your current states license and practice (from what I know). I'm not sure of the process of working at a civilian facility though. Good luck!
