Never driving to work in snow again

Long story short: I live in Md and we go hit with some snow. I attempt to drive to work. I got stuck twice had , nearly drove myself into a ditch in the woods, and had to sit in my car for 2 hours with NO heat while waiting for a ride. I thank GOD and his angels for protecting me against seen and unseen car accidents. However, I will never risk my life like that again. BTW- I just brought brand new tires. No help. Until I get a 4 wheel drive I will be calling out.

With the big winter storm hitting the Midwest right now, this issue comes to the fore again. Hopefully everyone who does drive in stays safe. I'm watching the news right now and the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers have apparently taken their ice storm to Texas. :D

Yup, I'm a little worried about getting to work on Friday a.m. I'm in Southeast Texas close to Houston so we rarely get ice/snow. Our roads typically do not get sanded or de-iced. Maybe some of the overpasses will get treated but you are on your own getting to the highway. Our cars/tires are not equipped. Many people think they can drive on sleet ridden roads. You should see all the cars in the ditches during a freeze. :uhoh3:

I admit I have NO IDEA how to drive in those conditions. Only good thing is that it will most likely get above freezing Friday so things should thaw out. Not going to help us in the wee hours of the morning.

Fiona, did you ever work in Texas by any chance?

I disagree that nurses should be allowed to call out because of snow. If you drive slow and leave in plenty of time (I allow 45 minutes to drive 5 miles), there should be no reason that you should get stuck..4 wheel drive or not.

Someone, has to be there and if it snows for you, it snows for everyone else as well who had to go to take your place.

In the winter, you always need to keep your gas tank full for emergencies...that is why you had to sit there with no heat for 2 hours...had you had a full gas tank, a car can sit idle for several hours before the gas tank runs out. I refill my car every other day in the dead of winter for this very reason.

Seriously...we had a nurse who got fired for calling out because of snow...b/c other nurses that lived in her same geographical area, made it to work.
