Should I leave this racist town?
Yes, you should go where you have researched the patient population prior to accepting a position. That's the essence of Nursing: that you accept the people you're working among. Also, please realize the racist problem goes both ways - especially these days.

Never driving to work in snow again
Fiona, did you ever work in Texas by any chance?

Do you work at Providence Spokane, Everett, or Olympia?
Thumbs down for Providence in Olympia. I have heard the morale is terrible.

Burned out at the bedside, thinking about advice nursing
I was recently at a AAACN conference and there were a couple of Kaiser T.T. nurses there... great people, very very professional IMO. I LOVE T.T.! I was really burned out at bedside nursing and was injured (that's a whole other story!) and my eventual arrival at TT has been a huge blessing. It's not as easy as it may seem. You need to be computer-competent for one thing. You need great assessment and communication skills. I work in a call center and really enjoy my co-workers... I value them as people hugely, and as great resources, we are continually bouncing ideas off of each other... it takes a year plus to get good at this specialty, as with many others, to appreciate nuances and get to know the software and the system... Write me if you'd like to talk more.

# of calls per hour
I work in a call center in the evenings, and they would like us to take and document 3 to 4 calls per hour. There is a big emphasis on customer satisfaction - in my opinion, that includes the physicians for whom we take call, but the hospital's approach seems more like it's the general public they want to look good for: so, we end up taking calls for both our patients and the general public... which of course skews our numbers...

Time Management Strategies
Dear cousx2: It's nearly a year later. I read your articulate posting about your thoughts on time management needing improvement several weeks into your ER preceptorship. I am researching time management strategies and would like to know, please, if you could tell me what tips you would have for a 'newbie' asking the same question now that you did in January - i.e. how do I do things faster, more thoroughly, more independently, more confidently - on my own? What mantra's do seasoned nurses use or what now-deeply-entrenched rules of thumb do they adhere to? I thought I would write you privately, but perhaps others would appreciate hearing from you too, in retrospect. Thanks very much!

Blood administration policy
Glad I was able to access this link at work, because someone just asked me if they could give blood thru a 20-gauge Huber needle, I told them yes, I thought so, used to use 22/24 g on neonates all the time without a 2nd thought, but could someone more experienced with Huber's than me reassure me I told her it was o.k.? Not sure why there would be a difference - maybe you could explain why, if there is. Thanks!

Extra-long scrubs - know of any online vendors?
Thank you so much!

Extra-long scrubs - know of any online vendors?
You know, I never really thought of myself as a mutant at 5' 9" until my quest for scrubs that are long enough became more... questy. I need 34 - 35" inseam. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried all the big brands, I've tried Green Scrubs (close but no cigar), I've tried Cotton Scrubs (better if I don't have to hem 'em), and I am very close to changing my career if I can't find clothes... but that's another thread... :trout: (What does that mean?) Am I asking too much? Thanks a million, Chronic Floodpant Syndrome-afflicted in Washington State.

Pronunciation
ElkPark, you have me ROFL laughing again! Same reasons people pull bed sheets "taunt"... people buying houses use "relators"... exacerbations are "exasperations"... Cardizem is "Cardiazem"... fibrillation is "fibulation"... I could go on and on... but my toes are curling up...

Near miss, should I be blamed?
Totally agree with hrtprncss' thoughts & SBjerne's practice at her other place of work. You acted really carefully & thoroughly & quickly, it sounds like to me!! Too bad your management is dumping on you!! That bites!! Wish you were my nurse (on a better day) Go easy on yourself, you did good. Your friend & nursing sister, A

new nurse dead at 23
So sorry for the loss of your friend. What a shock. Honor him by remembering his gentleness and proficiency when you need to draw strength. ElkPark, I absolutely agree with your thoughts on nurses being in the background (compared to other service providers) when risk or danger is present in the workplace. This is truly one of my biggest disappointments in my career choice, that we are taken for granted so often...
