Nevada State College Acc BSN..share experiences?

U.S.A. Nevada

Hello all,

I'm a pre-nursing student from CA. The prospects of me getting into a masters or accelerated BSN program right now is not too good, and I've currently been looking at schools in Nevada...specifically, Nevada State College. I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences with the NSC accelerated BSN program in terms of admissions, whether it was competitive, and if it is generally a program you would recommend. I'm willing to move over there for school and I'd be extremely grateful for any advice.:)

I'm in the same boat you are. It would be nice to get more info.

Bump. Does anyone know if this school has rolling admissions? I'm confused about their deadlines.

The accelerated program deadline is March 1st.

I just applied to the accelerated and regular programs.

Here's a link to more info!

Specializes in ICU.

As a former student and advisor I feel safe in telling you it's competitive. You need almost all of your pre-reqs to be done before you can even apply. I would recommend checking out the webpage and then calling Malinda G. the pre-nursing advisor. Each year, it only gets more competitive. There are also more pre-reqs than with community college, and most students will need to take additional classes before they are eligible to be in the accelerated program.

Just an FYI Nevada higher education is on the verge of exploding for the worse. There are three options on the table and two of them are closing down NSC.

so apply cautiously

Thanks cingham. I came across that information as well. In addition to NSC, I'm also applying to UNLV.

I did find a letter dated 2/11/10 from the NSC President stating that until the March 4 Regents meeting, "no statements regarding the impact of the reductions on any institution have veracity."

It's best to keep all your options open JIC.

I AM SO SORRY IF THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR BUT....The govenor of Nevada does not give a hoot about education. He stated- "class size does not impact learning" in reference to grade & high school! I would be willing to bet that he will get away with closing Nevada State College- it has been on the chopping block before but not with this much financial impact to the point of choosing between UNLV and NSC. Plus the tuition at UNLV will probably increase by 1/3 minimally--and I have not been watching this jack of all trades because he infuriates me!!-- "while I am govenor, I will not raise taxes", but your children will get no education and we will build a 2.3 billion dollar city office building downtown to try to bring in business to the hookers and uneducated workers... who are getting pay cuts and being laid off every other week. Reminds me of the story "The Emporor is Wearing No Clothes".

This has not worked thus far, BE AWARE BEFORE APPLYING TO COLLEGE HERE IN NEVADA!!! Do you really want to move your whole family here? I am at a loss when I finish my associates at CSN I had planned to go to NSC to finish my BSN. I am very sad about all of this, my kids are in the school system here and I am as well so if I can save you any heart ache- save yourselves.

No offense intended about uneducated workers-- I am one myself. It is so difficult to get an education; it is now even more difficult.

I am in the 1st semester CSN program and I know I'm safe for now. I also planned on going to NSC for their RN-BSN program but, all these talk about saving at least TWO of the state schools make me nervous. I agree, NSC is on thin ice, I just hope they can stay afloat. It's a shame too, since NSC just came up with the part-time nursing program last year. If I only had the BSN pre-reqs done, I probably would've applied there myself!

I am in my 2nd semester at CSN and we are not really safe. THey are prob going to enact the 'state of emergency' clause and start letting teachers go-RIGHT NOW during spring semester--they do not have to finish paying out their current contract--tenure or brand new; they have already called the meeting to set it in motion. The emergency clause puts them all at an equal level. They will be increasing furlow time- (you know when you go in to the office during business hours and nobody is there to help you? That is "time without pay", although I am sure I spelled that word wrong) cutting admissions, increasing class sizes, increasing tuition, decreasing availability times for classes; the work load will increase for each teacher left on campus. What do you think that will do to us? How happy and gracious will the teachers be with us over-anxious-stressed out students? No, we are not safe at all!! Pray a lot is all I can say; and write to Gov Gibbons- tell him, beg him!--not to cut education!

I hate to even think of a possibility of anyone losing their teaching jobs. So far, I like all my CSN nursing instructors! I think the nursing program and professors will be safe, as long as they have plenty of students applying for the program. I mean CSN is mostly known for the nurses they produce among other things. So if things are going to be cut, the nursing department will probably be at the bottom of the barrel. CSN will start cutting other degree programs that have the lowest student enrollment. I read an article about NSC (several years ago), when they had to do just that. I think it was some sort of a business degree. This article was on the Las Vegas Journal newspaper.

I agree, Gibbons should be impeached. But, the next governor will probably end up doing the same thing too? Nevada is running out of options, raising taxes on people IS an option. But, who is even going to take that seriously when most Nevadans are bankrupt or on the verge of being one?
