Hello Everyone,
I am going to apply for NELRP for 2010. I am getting married in June '10. I am wondering if when I apply, will they look at my debt to income ratio or that of me and my husbands combined income once we are married, since we are getting married in the middle of the application process. If anyone knows I would love to know. My debt to income ratio by my self is 268%, but much less with my fiances income added. Right now I live with my parents and am struggling to pay my loans.
Thanks,
Sarah

Interesting gives a lot of good stats on the NELRP program and awards
The stimulus $ has helped increase the number of awards, only thing is more and more applicants are applying too.
lkmrn123, good catch! I never even thought to check that section. I logged onto the NELRP application just about daily to see if there was any sort of change to the status (even though it says they won't update you), and never thought to check that. Now looking at the loan section I see that several of my loans were changed from 3/12 to 5/20, perhaps to update the total balance on the loans? 5 out of 23 of my loans were updated to the 5/20 date. So this is definitely something you can check to see if your loans are being verified/processed.arbrn, last year several people on the forums received an acceptance letter before they ever got any sort of communication from HRSA. Honestly the call reps at HRSA, while pleasant for the most part, should not be taking calls regarding NELRP. I gathered from my several phone calls that they have no way to access anything about NELRP and can only answer basic rudimentary questions regarding the program (and not even that so well depending on your rep). This definitely was more nerve-wracking than NCLEX! NCLEX was a breeze compared to this...
Bariq, unfortunately your chances for getting the NELRP working at a SNF are low, as SNFs are in the second tier of preference for selection, and as they state on the website, for the past 3 years in a row all applicants selected for NELRP were only in the first tier of preference. I'd advise that if this program is something crucial to you, you might want to take a look at DSHs in your area. However, check with your HR department to see if anyone has ever entered the NELRP program, as nursing homes are first preference, while SNFs are second preference (To be honest I didn't know there was much of a difference). Read the Application and Program Guidance on the website.
OBNurse1, aren't those taxes painful?
It is still a HUGE blessing regardless, don't get me wrong, but I've always wondered since this IS a government aid program, is there no way to make those payments tax-exempt?
Thank you for the information... I live in Philly and I have applied to every hospital in my area but no luck:confused:... I was able to get this job as a RN at Genesis Healthcare... Now I am worried that I wont qualify for NELRP 2011? The job market is tight and saturated in Philly, esp the Hospitals in Philly.... I appreciate the info;)
K I have officially become totally obsessed with finding out as much as I can about NELRP. I feel in my heart that this will be the year for me:)! I know a lot of people are hating on President Obama/Democrats right now, and believe me I am no real fan of anybody in politics, but I do feel that the feds are trying to help those middle class citizens, like me who have jobs (no raise in 2 yrs, salary less than 5 yrs ago) but I do work, have a home, car, food, clothes, go to a movie, have cable and internet. I am not one to get a handout... I pay my bills, take care of my kids, help my elderly mom, but no real savings (retirement yes) cash money no...........and I feel being an RN is a very proud and honorable profession.... but over $100,000 to get an education.. that's too much... especially if you will be working in a public service type of job....providing to care to those who would otherwise go without it..........so I came upon this web site...would not load so I had to view cache.....Good news for those of us looking for a little help paying for our education..................
Nurse Loan Repayment and Scholarship Program (+$87.9 million)
This request supports an increase of $87.9 million for the Loan Repayment and Scholarship Program. The increase will support a commitment from nurses and nursing students to work in shortage facilities. The FY 2010 budget request will support 990 new loan repayment awards for RNs agreeing to work in health care facilities with a critical shortage of nurses and an estimated 619 scholarships.
In FY 2009, NELRP received 7,774 eligible applications and made 840 initial (2 year) awards and 169 amendment (3 year) awards. Total obligated funds: $47,514,283.
In FY 2008, NELRP received 6,078 eligible applications and made 232 initial (2 year) Awards and 203 amendment (3 year) awards. Total obligated funds: $18,898,427.87.
In FY 2007, NELRP received 4,711 eligible applications and made 315 initial (2-year) awards and 271 amendment (3-year) awards. Total obligated funds: $18,373,815.48.
The budget also proposes a substantial increase for the Title VIII Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP), recommending $125 million, an $87.9 million (237 percent) increase over FY 2009. The Title VIII Nursing Faculty Loan program also is increased to $16 million, a $4.5 million (39.1 percent) increase. The budget proposes funding all other Title VIII programs at FY 2009 levels, yielding $263.4 million for the Title VIII programs in total (a $92.4 million or 54 percent increase).

I actually posted earlier about the increase for this year, you can read a full report on NELRP 2010 from the 2010 HRSA budget approval report:
But I wouldn't count yourself out anytime soon, it seems that the budget for NELRP is being significantly raised for 2010! According to HRSA documents, we'll see approx. $73 million in funds for 2010 (raised from $22.8 million last year), largely in part thanks to Obama requesting a total of $125 million for the program (part of that total goes to the Scholarship program)!Read about it here starting on page 64:

So let's cross everyone's fingers, could be beautiful news.
Yes:) Thank you, I saw your post on page 6, but for some reason I could not get it to load yesterday, the HRSA sites were down all day too. The phone lines ring busy yesterday and today. Maybe folks are "ramping up" trying ot find out more information since letters are being mailed earlier this year. I can only hold on, hoping for the best, if not then there is next year.....Very good info on this blog about the NELRP I wish something like this was available in the first few years of the program.

I found this information on the web, hope for the 90% or so who will not get the NELRP. It states the repayment program for income contigent is supposed to be based on AGI not gross income, it's the amount after all the taxes and allowable deductions, I think my repayment is based on gross income I'm going to check on this.......

Not really an update on loan forgiveness status, more that they verified you have a loan, I guess, this is the very first year I even tried to look at my application, I usually just wait to hear back from them.
