Need to retake Teas

Nursing Students TEAS

Published

Hello! I just recently took the Teas for the first time. I need to retake it bc I totally bombed :(. I was wondering if anyone had any advice? I read a few threads where it says the second time around There is a possibility it could be the same test. I've been out of school for over 12 years. I used the Mcgraw practice book and didnt feel like it was the same as the actual test. The ATI is a bit pricey. i am just worried i wont do good the second time either

@loyalweim thank you so much for your advice and offering to help me with math. Im going to print all the advice and get to studying! I study when my kids sleep when I finally get peace and quiet!! I really appreciate it!!

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I ended up taking it twice before applying to nursing schools and the second one was very different than the first one. I also did not want to pay for any books, so just looked online for sites that had review questions and study guides.

sweet101,

You are quite welcome! Did you acquire the ATI study manual? I highly recommend that you use it as your primary resource.

How is that math study coming along?

LW

I passed my TEAS V my first try last week.

I have to say, the science section on the actual exam was MUCH harder than I anticipated after going through the ATI study manual, but I did pass!

I personally like making lists, I get a feeling of satisfaction when I cross something off my to do list.

I recommend breaking the book down into sections. Break the reading section up into smaller sections, do the same for the other subjects. It's easier to focus on smaller clusters in my opinion and helped me stay on track and focused. As you finish objectives, cross them off, or my favorite HIGHLIGHT them off! It keeps things in perspective and it feels more doable knowing that things are coming to an end.

The study manual is a drag, I won't lie. It can be incredibly boring BUT everything on the exam is covered in the manual so I do recommend buying it! I also recommended KhanAcademy.com as an online resource for the science section (although they offer other subjects as well, definitely check it out!)

Take the practice exams in the back of the book, there's two, and take one online. Also don't forget to time yourself!

Good luck!

@loyalweim, I received it and printed out rainbows list. Once school starts for my preschooler on monday, I am going to start. Im afraid to forget things, Ive always studied close to when I had an exam. Im not too worried about the eng and reading, and math I found someone to help in person. science on the other hand, I will try to do my best and focus on that. I really dont know why they added chemistry to the TEAS :/ I'm taking Microbio I start Aug 25th. So in btw 2 kids, school, I need to buckle down and prepare myself :)

congratulations @niftygirl2014!! Thank you for the advice!! I love Khanacademy! I have the app on my phone. I get nervous just thinking about the retake next month. God willing I will do much better. I just need to prepare myself better :)

sweet101,

Well then it sounds like you have 50% of the exam down so it will most likely come down to the math and science. Unlike NiftyGirl2014, I found the science much easier than I expected. But, I spent a *huge* amount of time on this section with my studies. I also used every resource that I could to strengthen my science.

I will admit, I found the science section to be daunting and on the actual exam I thought the questions were broad which made it seem more difficult. But that's just for me. I also didn't spend the full time on the science section nor did I revisit questions. I have the tendency to overthink and change my answers and then I end up getting them wrong. So I went through it in about 20 minutes and I either knew it or I made my best possible guess. I didn't let the anxiety of not knowing for sure ruin the confidence I had built.

Ironically, I struggled with science the most on my exam but that was my second highest score. Be confident in yourself, but of course put in the time and effort before your exam to build that confidence.

I think the ATI book is a good investment. You can get it used on Amazon for under $20 if you shop around. Also try Ebay. The practice problems with the explanations are very informative. The Mcgraw is also great, but it doesn't have nearly as many explanations for solutions to the problems as the ATI book does. If you get easily distracted like I do, wear earplugs to the exam. I don't think wearing them is prohibited. Also, wear a watch. I found that the timer can be hidden in the upper right corner as you scroll down to answer questions, which can make you lose track of time. I don't know what schools you are applying to, or what state you're in? Some schools don't care how many times you take the TEAS as long as you pass. Try not to stress. If it's meant to be, it'll happen. Best of luck to you on your nursing journey:)

I also took the TEAS V last week and did not score as well as I would have liked. I think what surprised me the most was how I did on reading which to me is my strongest subject. My score ended up being about even for science, reading and english. However, the results from the test will help know what I need to focus on more next time I take it. Definitely invest in the ATI manual, then especially in the science go a little more in depth. Best of luck!!

@javachick78 im in FL. my college allows me to take it 3 times in 1 yr with a 30 day waiting period btw each time so hopefully this second time will be the last time ever! Thank you so much for the advice
