Can any of you give me tips on how to get these kids all caught up on immunizations?? I have sent out a letter. I am sending another tomorrow (if I get the ok from the superintindent) that is a little more stern! LOL Also, any advice on your SHACs would be greatly appreciated. I want to start a SADD group at my shool. Do any of you have one???:nurse:

as far as the immunizations go: use your state mandates.

Make a list of who is missing what and give a deadline for parents to either get you proof of vaccine or a note from the doctor stating there is an impending appointment. if they don't give me the paperwork, the kids are excluded from school until i get what i need. (by the way, if i get a note from a doc that is fine, but the proof of vaccine better be in my hot little hand the very next day after the appointment.)

If the administration is being wishy-washy about you excluding kids over vaccines then do a little research - in my state the fine is $250.00 per pupil per day. A figure like that is bound to convince the admins to support you on excluding the students.

Blackscrubs,

I don't know where you are, but here in the state of Texas, the motto is No Shots, No School, No Kidding. Our reportable grades are PK, K, and 7th. The first week of school, I mailed a letter to all deliquent students/parents giving them one week to bring in proof of up to date immunizations. The day of the deadline, I sent a "final notice" home with the students stating they could not come back to school. After that, I started tossin kids out of school. When they show up after "final notice" without proof, I call the parents and tell them to either come pick thier child up or bring a good shot record - either way, I need to see them. Trust me, it doesn't make me popular, but right now, I have 3 7th graders left to go - 2 of them have appointments for NLT the 12th of October, 1 who just enrolled a couple of days ago and has until the 15th to provide good records.

If you need a copy of the letters my district uses, let me know and I'll see if I can e-mail them to you.

That's the way it is in Georgia too. Some principals are easier about it than others. I my previous school the admins learned the hard way to get those immunization forms BEFORE the student is enrolled. They failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress 2 years in a row, partly because the immunization rate was between 30% & 50% :uhoh3:

In my current school system, they don't even let the child attend ONE SINGLE DAY of school until they have that immunization form in their hands. I send out a letter for our 5th graders in March to the effect of "I have checked your child's immunization record and Johnny will need XYZ to enter middle school next fall. Please see your PCP. Students without proper immunizations will be denied entry on the first day of school." (I didn't make this form up, it comes from the county. And its just about that blunt, too.) And they mean it! First day of school at the middle school, there were some upset parents who (of course!) "never received any letter.":clown: Too bad for them I put a copy in the cumulative folder!

Every year, it comes down to a couple of kids who I have to exclude for no shots. I hate to do it, but it is the law. I give them 2 letters and 1 phone call before excluding

Scrubs,

I emailed you. Let me know if you get it.

It needs to be a community wide effort that starts the spring before.
