Hello all,

I am currently in my last semester of my BSN schooling. I live in, and attend school in Delaware. I am graduating on May 5, 2012 and I am planning on moving to New York shortly after graduation. When i take NCLEX should I, and can I, apply to be licensed in the state of New York right away or do I HAVE to get licensed in Delaware since my adress will be a Delaware adress when i take NCLEX? Can i take the NCLEX in Delaware to be certified in New York - and if so will my results be mailed to me in Delaware? I am just really confused about how the process works and my professors haven't explained it. ANY help or insight will be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!!

Are Delaware and NY part of a compact state? Since you are going to school in Del, you should test in Del, and then apply for endorsement in NY. Check on both BON sites and see what they require.

I went to school in CA and got my CA license and transferred it to my home state now without any problems. You just give NY your Del license info and pay their fee and no problem.

Contact the Board of Nursing in the state you are interested in being licensed..most have a FAQ page online.....

Apply to the New York board of nursing to take the NCLEX. You do not have to live in a state to take the boards for that state, as long as you meet the requirements to take the test in the state you want to. I live in Texas and I know of several nurses that took the nclex for California, and Florida from Texas. They will mail your results to you in Delaware.

You can apply for licensure wherever you want. I went to school in MA and many of my classmates were moving back home or moving somewhere else for work. Some were from NY, went back home for the summer, took NCLEX there and then moved to PA or CA or DC. NCLEX is a national test, it's the same test for licensure in all 50 states and Washington, DC and you can test in one state for licensure in another. There's no reason to pay for two licenses if you have no intention of using your Delaware license.

In a few months, you will have to fill out your application for your license as well as for the NCLEX. When I did it, it had to be done through school as, after you graduate, your school has to send information to the company that oversees NCLEX (at the time it was some company in Tennessee) proving that you have graduated from a nursing program and are eligible to test. Along with this they send your application for licensure in whatever state you are intending to be licensed in. So what you need to do is apply for NY licensure when you submit all this information.

Thank you all so much for clearing it up!
