:typing My husband and I would like to live on the coast near Wilmington or New Bern, but I would like to know what the hospitals are like to work in. I am also interested in who has the best health insurance from other's personal experiences, as well as other perks offered to employees...if any. Also, I am currently a dialysis nurse and would love to continue doing this work wherever I go...if possible :redpinkhe.

At this time I am leaning toward New Bern, simply because it is so beautiful and quaint. My husband and I would like to live somewhere with a diverse population. We have no children and still enjoy going out on occassion as well as involving ourselves in outdoor activities. We love the beach. I have heard that Wilmington is better for younger couples like ourselves. Something that is also important is crime rate :redlight:. Does anyone have any of this information that might help my husband and I make the best choice?

I am also open to other suggestions near either of these areas on the coast.

:thankya:

Thanks!

I'm with you, looking at New Bern also, however for a place to live and work in now and enjoy for retirement in 12 years or so. My daughter is in Raleigh and I would either like the triangle area or New Bern, possibly Wilmington. A friend interviewed at Wilmington and was really impressed by the hospital and friendliness of the other nurses. Any input from the hospital at New Bern, folks?

went to wilmington over the weekend and loved it. now that i have had the opportunity to just spend a relaxing day in the city, it seems ideal. i don't know when my husband and i will be able to relocate, but i am keeping my fingers crossed that it will happen. i am very willing to listen to any comments concerning the healthcare facilities. i would rather have too much information than not enough! :innerconf

thank you!

Hi Napdogg,

Wilmington is a great city, but I'm not that impressed with the hospitals. Both hospitals are owned by New Hanover Health Network, so there's not any competition. Just from what I've heard from nurses and seen through my clinical experiences, there's a lot of turnover with RNs. Apparently the pay is significantly less than what you would find elsewhere in NC. Believe me, I would love to stay here when I graduate (which is soon), but I just don't think I could afford the high cost of living with the low pay:o. That's just my two cents on it, since nobody else has said anything!

Hope that helps a little bit!

Wilmington is very "cliquish" from what I've heard from other nurses who have gone there. I've also heard the hospitals have a high turnover rate compared to other hospitals. Maybe clinics there are different? Of course thats not from personal experience but its from several nurses who don't know each other. It is a great area though! Plenty to do and see.
